Polar stereographic map of sea surface temperature trends for Septembers from 1979 to 2024. Red shading is shown for warming trends, and blue shading is shown for cooling trends. All areas of the ocean are observing warming.
Sea surface temperatures are warming across the entire periphery of the #Arctic Ocean in September.
This is especially observed in areas with long-term declines in sea ice concentration, such around the Chukchi and Kara Seas.

A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.
The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii.
@noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Currently reading “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. What a wonderful reminder to tag out for a bit and enjoy some of the natural world.
It’s also an amazing reminder that our natural world is being threatened by Climate Change and Capitalism! There’s work to do…

In a time when “diversity, equity, and inclusion” are suddenly considered “discriminatory”, remember there is an ENTIRE community of scientists, professionals, and leaders who stand by these principals. We will always work towards a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future. #STEM #SCICOMM

Here, we’ll interpret this for Wall Street:
Compounding interest is earned on both the initial principal amount and the interest accumulated in previous periods.
Compounding catastrophe is earned on both the initial disaster and the disaster accumulated in previous periods.

Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.
NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.
We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.
2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Uncontrolled over the surface, and infiltrate areas that weren’t previously getting too much groundwater. As a professional geologist in SoCal, we see this pattern happen again and again. Even bigger of a question, how will the City of LA treat fire rebuilds? Many of these original homes were built…

A hillside fire burning in West Hollywood on January 8, 2025.
With wildfires continuing to rage through Los Angeles, what happens after the smoldering stops? SoCal is technically within its ‘wet’ season, and a serious aftermath will be countless surficial or even deep seated landslides. These fires strip vegetation and allow rainwater to flow…

A map from CalFire showing the locations of the Palisade, Eaton, and Hurst fires. The Palisade fire has currently burned over 15,000 acres. The Eaton fire has burned over 10,000 acres. The Hurst fire has burned over 500 acres.
With the Palisade, Eaton, and Hurst fires still burning and 0% containment, the amount of devastation is increasing by the minute. A disaster that is no doubt a result of a warming climate, decreasing rainfall, and a longer fire season. ⚒️

The Palisades Fire burning outside of Los Angeles has now burned nearly 16,000 acres, according to the latest estimate by CalFire.
That’s an increase of 4,000 acres – or 34% -- in the past two hours. There is 0% containment.

20th Century Lead Exposure Damaged American Mental Health | DUPRI
“…Reuben and his colleagues found that…The generation with the greatest lead exposures, Generation X (1965-1980), would have seen the greatest mental health losses.”
An interesting topic of consideration, since many of today’s influential people are a part of Gen X.

Great article, btw! So we’re looking at a decadal scale of continued warming after achieving net zero assuming this model accurately predicts reality? Certainly a much better outcome than a couple hundred years.

Interesting, and thank you for sharing. So this suggests if we achieved net zero tomorrow, then warming trends stop the same day, and equalize until sinks begin to slowly reduce some of the warming? What about other GHG’s? This model only considers CO2.

Yes equilibrium will be achieved but not immediately. The feedback doesn’t occur instantly because of the varying residence times for GHG’s.

A trend that is guaranteed to continue. Even if we halted all emissions now, the residence time of green house gasses would still deliver climbing global temperatures for decades to come.

Gdp chart comparing US GDP @ 27.36T to China @ 17.79T
The United States has the highest GDP in the world by *ten trillion dollars*. It's not even close. Americans should retire at 60 w/ full pension. We should have free universal healthcare. We should have free PreK-PhD education. This belt-tightening ideology is a neurotoxin limiting our potential.

Has global warming accelerated in recent decades? If we look at the rate of warming between 1970 and 2008 and extend it through present, we see that almost all years since 2015 are above the previous trend.
