Jay Bhattacharya has ordered that a paper showing the effectiveness of COVID19 vaccines in preventing severe disease and hospitalization be suppressed and hidden.
This man has been crying nonstop about political censorship for 6 years.
But he’s the one who is actually doing it.
Pretty sure it doesn't. John Roberts will even tell you this
If Democrats won't credibly punish Republicans for defecting, there is no reason for them to not defect. They can gain the benefits from defecting today and pay no cost for it tomorrow. You can't shame them out of it so a credible tit for tat strategy is the way to get back to cooperation on norms
How does this relate to gerrymandering? In this case, nonpartisan districting is cooperating, as are other norms. The best way to get people to cooperate with norms is to have serious consequences for breaking them.
Once the other player has been "punished" by cooperating in a period where you defect, you then resume cooperating. The future losses of having both players defect act as an incentive for both players to cooperate in every period.
Under some assumptions about future discounting and such, cooperation can be sustainable but it requires a credible threat of punishment. The best strategy is known as tit for tat. What it involves is when the other player defects, you defect in the next period.
Almost everyone knows the prisoners dilemma where both players are incentivized to defect. What people are less familiar with is the repeated prisoners dilemma. What if two players play that game with each other over and over. Is it possible for them to sustain cooperation?
The result in Virginia is really good. Not just as a political outcome, but also normatively. Any path back to better districts runs through some extremely partisan gerrymanders like this. Its time for some game theory (non ironically)
Any discussion of gerrymandering that leaves off NC, Ohio, and the pizza wedges that Nashville has been cut into to deny its residents a representative is not a serious one.
Reasonable probability that the seller is Jewish. The word for life in Hebrew also the number 18 and is good luck. I have spent a lifetime with gifts that are multiples of 18 or end in 18.
I will ask the same question I ask every time, can you name a single industry that PE has ever entered and made better for the customer?
Time for some actual game theory. The best way to sustain cooperation in a repeated prisoners dilemma is a tit for tat strategy. If the Democrats refuse to credibly punish GOP breaking of cooperation, then there is no reason for GOP to not defect every time

one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus

Oh it turns out that vanquishing the college student who uses they/them in their email signature is not bringing you the fulfillment that you hoped for? You are still working in your crappy and unfulfilling job, paying a mortgage you now can't afford, and dealing with your annoying kids... I see.
Probably not a deal I’m taking. I value getting in on time but I can see that for some people those hours are worth the periodic inconvenience. My extremely utilitarian friend would likely see anything better than a 1-1 exchange as a win and make use of the extra hours preflight
I both get the logic and want no part of it. I once had some fuckery that resulted in a missed flight. Wound up rebooking and getting in about 4 hours late. Was annoying but not ruinous. How many of the hundreds of hours I have since spent in airports would I want back to do it again?
We are back to the war crime part of the cycle
I have never pushed a potato through a strainer but I have to imagine the strainer requires a softer potato than a ricer or a mill but also that it will produce a finer, smoother potato than
Would a potato ricer or food mill work at this step?
Absolutely beyond parody
@harryoppy.bsky.social how do you feel about this analysis?
Beyond political conditioning (bc I’ve talked to plenty of left-of-center people from other parts of the U.S. who are a little leery of the subway!) I think this is the biggest reason for the disconnect in who perceives New York as inherently dangerous. Cars change your relationship to the world.
