Another rarity from the @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social archive. I watched this on the strength of the title alone, I wasn't disappointed, if you liked Goodnight Sweetheart it's safe to say you'll like this.

This is high quality children’s TV which never patronises its audience. Thanks @scarredforlife.bsky.social for reminding me about it in the second volume of your brilliant book. /ends

While never quite reaching the heights of the first series, they have their moments, the final scene of episode 1 Chocky's Challenge most notably! The whole thing put me in mind of Nigel Kneale's sci-fi: slow, deliberate, always believable, and genuinely unsettling. /4

in what would turn out to be his first and only acting role. The story builds to the absolute jaw dropping final episode, brilliantly acted by James Hazeldine who plays Matthew's dad. The sequels while not being directly based on Wyndham's book take the story on in a very plausible direction. /3

I would go as far as saying the first series is better than the book. It keeps a lid on the fantasy elements of the story and stays grounded in reality. The updating to the present day (then 1980s) is perfect and really adds to the story. Andrew Ellam gives a wonderful performance as Matthew /2

Just finished Chocky's Challenge the third instalment of this brilliant Thames kids TV series. The first season was based on the book and scared the life out of me as a kid. So much so I said I hated the show and never saw the sequels. Watching them back 40 years later I absolutely love them! /1

A ★★★ review of The Stranglers of Bombay (1959) I caught this at the second time of trying today on TPTV. I was curious as it seemed to be based on the same source material as Indianna Jones and the Temple of Doom: the Kali worshipping death cult o...

Watched it second time around, it was worth waiting for... reminded me of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

I thought I could detect its influence on the recent Fantastic 4 film, the bit where they take a rocket into space and go face Galactus. But maybe it was just me?

Reminds me of the reports of encounters with Men In Black. There was something slightly off about them too: ill fitting out of fashion suits, weird hair, and they moved like they had more joints in their limbs than they needed.

Shame I will have to see if I can catch it when it's next on, is that on the 1st April?

As like the fake oasis spotted by persons dieing of thirst in the desert, Mssr Farage is also akin to a purveyor of illusionary sucour to a desperate electorate. So hence forth I will exclusively refer to him by this hilarious and piquant play on his given name namely Nigel MIRAGE. 2/2

Dear Viz I wanted to share with you the thought I just had whilst sitting on the porcelain throne, namely that Nigel Farage should really go by the moniker Nigel MIRAGE! I am left wondering why no one has thought of this before. In the next tweet I will explain how I arrived at this insight... 1/2

Just watched this on encore, loved it! A real classic b-movie following in the footsteps of much bigger budget The Day the Earth Stood Still, thanks @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social for unearthing another gem.

I count it as one of the most successful VFX shots the BBC ever did, pure magic.

Watched this today as good as I remember it being, misremembered the title though, it's actually called The Fishing Party. Forgot it was set in Whitby, don't know if the chippie they go to is The Magpie Cafe though... @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social

But who was that 'someone'?...
"And then someone remembered the the multi-touch experiment that the design studio folks had assembled a couple of years earlier. [...] Maybe the phone would be a full multi-touch screen—no tiny thumb key-board! Nothing on the front surface but screen!"

Just bought The Fishing Trip on DVD, saw this last back in the 90s, remember it as being brilliant with a stand out performance by Brian Glover. Will see if it stands up now! Nice one @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social
