A nice reminder from Ember, using British data. Wind and solar are complementary. Our system works best when you have both, each calling on their own strengths in terms of generation patterns.
If either struggles to grow like it should, we end up with a more expensive, slower fossil phase-out

I just hit go on my first major piece of work from Naru Research: a guide to Australia's Safeguard Mechanism for change advocates and curious folks who love to learn.

Solar manufacturing capacity is approx double demand. Same with wind nacelles and batteries.
The problem with Chinese manufacturing is not overcapacity!
It's UNDERDEMAND.
But how will it look as 2 x big fossil fuel supply shocks sink in?

As tech billionaires race to embed AI everywhere, some renewables companies will see the chance to secure contracts with thirsty data centres. This opens other risks:
- Exposure to a speculative bubble
- Association with destructive industry
- Derailing the energy transition for everyone else
Renewable energy should be about powering public goods -- homes, hospitals, transport. The things we need to live and thrive. Not labor destroying technology and military infrastructure like generative AI that transfers wealth from regular people to billionaires. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

In the 1930s, Oswald Mosley claimed to be a patriot, while his British Union of Fascists was secretly funded by the Italian government. We are just beginning to grasp how much of the far right in the UK today has been funded by Viktor Orbán and Russian oil money.
Their "patriotism" is always a con.
It is good that Norway taxes oil+gas. But it is extremely bad that we use that cash to help expand it, often in destructive ways and at great loss to ourselves.

“Projections suggest data centre cooling demand in Sydney could reach 250 megalitres a day by 2035, potentially accounting for up to a quarter of the city’s drinking water supply... There is currently no federal regulatory framework governing this demand.” satpa.pe/MmoZI1J
Blocking Iran's ports will only reduce the measly flow of oil further. US can only park ships in the strait temporarily, so as soon as they leave Iran can just keep clipping tickets. So yes, the plan is nonsense. At best it's a bargaining chip in these negotiations.
Blockade to un-blockade. Trump truly is a genius!🫠

This is the first oil crisis in which clean alternatives to oil and gas — solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles and batteries — are both inexpensive and widely available.

Kind of gross to realise that the Aus government only now cares about Israel's ongoing genocide because it affects the economy.
Albanese is so damn avoidant, Australia needs to directly condemn Israel's bombing if we want to see Lebanon protected in ceasefire

The US suffered its biggest strategic defeat in decades after following Israel into attacking Iran. China helped broker the cease-fire and now the Strait of Hormuz is controlled by Iran. Who comes out with more global influence?
