I love everything about this!
It's strange to see your teenage job turned into a video game... youtu.be/dCOYMuCh1cI?...
The legal questions you're nibbling at revolve around two unsettled aspects, the definition of "human authorship" (essentially how much human needs to be involved) and the practical ability to discern the level of involvement. It's difficult to discuss complex ramifications in 300 words.
Precedent setting rulings often start with edge cases. This one lines up with the patent office decision, which was also dismissed as an edge case.
While the Internet tries to die on every AI hill, this copyright precedent will have an atomic bomb sized impact. If AI art can't be copyrighted, its commercial value is incredibly limited. www.theverge.com/policy/88767...
I can't begin to describe how meteorically stupid it is to use gen AI for this purpose. It's entire operating structure is built around trying to anticipate the answer you want to hear. 3 months in and they only accidentally double checked its conclusions. Wow.
Gutsiest call I’ve ever seen! National champions!
Looking forward to diving into some nonfic gifts.
I was skeptical too. My brother recommended it when I was in New York, and I listened to the audiobook on the drive home. Way more fun than I expected. Audio production is the best I’ve come across. I’m hooked and on book 3. So far, each book tops the last. Definitely worth a shot. Happy New Year!

Favorite Fiction: Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman)

Favorite Reread: The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald)
Favorite Nonfiction: Cabin (Patrick Hutchinson)
All my recent books went from hardcover to trade paperback and almost all of my backlist in mass market has now migrated to trade. The role of mass market paperbacks is now handled almost entirely by ebooks. I'm okay with this but it is the end of an era.

A few of my film restoration buddies told me this was coming. Great to see it finally announced. The original, 1977 theatrical version of Star Wars restored for the 50th anniversary. Can't wait to see it in IMAX! gizmodo.com/star-wars-or...

Sad news
I'll be speaking at the GenCon Writers Symposium this week. If you're coming to Indianapolis for the event, drop by or DM me for a chat. #gencon #writerssymposium
Between that and the “apply” button LinkedIn makes everybody miserable.
Big teaching switch that should make all things writing easier. Keep your fingers crossed for me. The past year has been rough!
Appreciate the thought :)

In Windows, you can also get rid of the whole Office Copilot experience by going to add/remove programs. Your hard drive will thank you for the extra space. (courtesy @mwl.io)
Microsoft Office turned on Copilot AI without asking anybody. If you don't want the modern equivalent of Clippy, you can disable it by:
1. Selecting the Home Tab
2. Selecting Options
3. Selecting Copilot
4. Unchecking the box "Enable Copilot"
Great read! Really enjoyed it. Cheers to you!
