“War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent." -1984, George Orwell

The Mefloquine Intoxication Syndrome: A Significant Potential Confounder in the Diagnosis and Management of PTSD and Other Chronic Deployment-Related Neuropsychiatric Disorders Acute mefloquine intoxication may produce vivid, hyper-realistic nightmares that may precede a manic, paranoid, dissociative or confusional psychosis, often marked by horrific auditory and visual h…

The brain controls everything. As a result, the symptoms of mefloquine toxicity (Quinism) are broad and substantial.

I was offered a position as a staff psychologist within a VA outpatient mental clinic in 2018, during Trump 1.0. I was told I’d need to maintain a caseload of 150-200 patients. I turned down the job.

It was hard to imagine care standards getting worse. But it clearly has gotten much much worse.

"In addition to monitoring how metals trigger protein buildup, the researchers examined how compounds called chelators can interfere with or even undo that process."
A chelator is "chemical compound that binds tightly to metal ions... chelating agents are used to remove toxic metals from the body."

With the brain damage caused by mef, the connected epilepsy, and the medications I have to take to prevent seizures and cope with anxiety/depression, Alzheimer's is high on my list of future concerns.

Scientists Discover Way To Reverse Chemical Process Linked With Alzheimer’s Disease By watching Alzheimer’s-related protein clumping unfold second by second, researchers have uncovered new clues about the role of metal ions.

This amazing scientific advance may one day lead to either more effective treatments or dare I say perhaps a cure.
This is why it is vitally important to fund basic scientific research.

I was curious, so I asked for an essay comparing the books Watership Down and Beautiful Joe. It told me Joe was a bear and apologized when I said he's a dog. I didn't bother telling it that Beautiful Joe was my mother's favorite book as a child so it could not be published in 1993. Easy facts.

Malaria Is Still Endemic in 83 Countries Significant progress has been made in the fight against malaria over the last two decades. According to a new report by the World Health Organization, the…

Despite the DoD designating mefloquine a drug of "last resort" in 2013, I do not trust that the current administration will not decide to cut costs by claiming doxycycline and atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) are unavailable. Every service member that may be sent to the Middle East needs to be aware!

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

Tell the grocery where you bought it. They will probably give you a refund and actually be concerned about people buying the other pizzas. I just went through this with plastic in chips.

"Mef" (Lariam) has more side effects than chloroquine including the dreams and anxiety. While much cheaper than other anti-malarias, the side effects may become permanent symptoms of brain damage. The military is supposed use it only as a last resort and initially recommend Malarone or doxycycline.
