Despite the DoD designating mefloquine a drug of "last resort" in 2013, I do not trust that the current administration will not decide to cut costs by claiming doxycycline and atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) are unavailable. Every service member that may be sent to the Middle East needs to be aware!

"Mef" (Lariam) has more side effects than chloroquine including the dreams and anxiety. While much cheaper than other anti-malarias, the side effects may become permanent symptoms of brain damage. The military is supposed use it only as a last resort and initially recommend Malarone or doxycycline.
