Whilst there is still much work to do there are regions where girlsโ€™ sport is thriving, including rugby. Devon and Cornwall, pockets in the north and Wales too. My children attend a state school where sport is high on the agenda.

๐Ÿค”โ€ฆ.more meddling. Where is the evidence that this could work other than a vague reference to it being something similar to what happens in Europe? Just change the grading of MFL already!!

One thing that costs nothing which would revitalise languages in England. A sure-fire way, costing no money, to revitalise and reinvigorate take up of MFL at GCSE. Do you see what this is? It's anonymous targets fo...

We need to get past the MFL culture wars and look at the real problem.

The culture/communication versus grammar thing was nonsense. And in fact revealed the complexity and richness of our subject.

We need to tackle the system that undermines us:

And the river was lovely. If I was going to give one bit of advice to teachers, whatever their role, it would be to get out and walk. It gives you time to think, put things into perspective, and you are then able to organise your thoughts. You see clearer, if that makes sense.

Remember when they had us fighting each other in the MFL culture wars? Communication v Grammar, when of course it's both.

This is what they were trying to distract us from:

Great petrol price analogy. It hadnโ€™t dawned on me that grades were made even worse because of the change to 9-1 from A*-G

The magic of speaking another languageโ€ฆhaving a lovely chat in a v small art exhibition in a small town in Mallorca with an 80+ yr old chap #mfl

The elephant in the room with this otherwise nice report is grading.

If you sell petrol for ยฃ1.40 a litre but the place over the road and everywhere else sells it for ยฃ1.30, it's no good wondering why no-one picks languages.

Hey #Cornwall and #Wildswimming people.
I'm getting close to the end of my #AlphabetOfSwims raising funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians - and I need your help.
I still have to find locations for
J
N
O
U
and Z.
'Z' for Zennor seems obvious, but can you think of somewhere for any of the others?

Iโ€™d like to see more of the cultural aspect but what Iโ€™d like most is to stop having to justify MFL. Is there any subject that has to defend itself so frequently and to such a degree? MFL will once again, alongside many of the arts, become the preserve of the elite.

8 months ago 0 0 0 0

Exactly this. Had a discussion with a DH on Friday evening at sonโ€™s cricket match. He reckons that thereโ€™s no point pushing MFL as AI will take over. Didnโ€™t value language learning at all. A science teacher. Easier to have lower numbers as recruitment tricky. ๐Ÿ˜”

For A level yes, but less so at GCSE bar computer science I think
