In 1930, charismatic evangelicals led the fight against big-box stores in Appalachia. By 1978, most had joined the Moral Majority. You can see them in the Senate chambers on January 6.

One risk is reducing spiritual experience to a single type — the "unitary" state, or the dissolution of self — as if mysticism had one flavor. Quiet contemplative meditation and ecstatic keening both involve both prayer and brain states, obviously, but they are radically different. Treating them as one thing tells us very little.
