22 years of Brain Science: what CoSyNe tells us about the evolution of Neuroscience Tracking the intellectual DNA of Computational and Systems Neuroscience through its flagship meeting

I tracked every keyword in 22 years of Cosyne abstracts to map how computational neuroscience evolved — from Bayesian brains to neural manifolds to LLMs — and where it's heading next.

Flexible inference for animal learning rules using neural networks Understanding how animals learn is a central challenge in neuroscience, with growing relevance to the development of animal- or human-aligned artificial intelligence. However, existing approaches tend...

(1/n) Presenting our NeurIPS’25 work at #cosyne2026 poster 3-109
We introduce a flexible framework to infer how animals learn new decision-making tasks from scratch without assuming REINFORCE/Q-learning.

If you are at #cosyne2026 come see poster [2-152] Dynamical archetype analysis: Autonomous computation. Ábel Ságodi is presenting how you can compare dynamical systems at behaviorally relevant timescale while keeping the interpretability!

Very cool and fun! Quick feedback: I peaked at your repo and found that some older abstract books had some text extraction issues. Maybe worth double checking. Also, the colors on the histogram are not indicative of the location.

Externalized consciousness in practice! I lost my subjective experience decades ago. I briefly regained it last year but lost it again recently.

I've been seriously experimenting with AI tools. Claude Code is my current go-to. I treat learning AI tools more like playing an RPG. You level up as you go. You pick up a skill here, you pick up an armor there. There's too much to learn and you need to slowly acquire the skills.

Rejecting another Elsevier review request. Hoping my attempt at a dispassionate tone keeps my contempt for Elsevier from leaking through.

We’re hiring postdocs/research scientists! Your interests can be anywhere on the spectrum from pure theory to empirically testing predictions relevant to AI safety.

Our theoretical work relies on dynamical systems and tools from statistical physics.

Applications for 2026 entry to the Gatsby Bridging Programme (7-week maths summer school) will open on 19 Jan and close on 16 Feb. Designed for students who wish to pursue a postgrad research degree in theoretical neuroscience or foundational machine learning but whose degree programme lacks a strong maths focus. Applications from students in underrepresented groups in STEM strongly encouraged. A small number of bursaries available.
Register for the information webinar on 23 Jan.

🚨📜+🧵🚨 Very excited about this work showing that people with no hand function following a spinal cord injury can control the activity of motor units from those muscles to perform 1D, 2D and 3D tasks, play video games, or navigate a virtual wheelchair

Client Challenge

We have reached a situation where (1) the time/resources spent by people applying for grant X often outweighs (2) the time/resources awarded.

For these grants, society loses net time/resources.

according to TripIt, I traveled 240Mm (yes, that's mega-meters), 10 countries in 2025. Oh my. I'm definitely going to travel much much less this year.

according to last.fm, my favourite artist of 2025 was #LauraThorn. Scrobbled 493/5728 times (just one song; La poupée monte le son). 0.01% of fans worldwide for the song. Of 2672 unique tracks I listened to. Also #1 on Beatrice Rana's Goldberg Variations album.

A major personal goal for 2025 was extensive networking. I met so many interesting people around the world, which helped enable these meetings and future collaborations.

Not everything worked out. I submitted six major grant applications in 2025; five were rejected, despite substantial time and resources invested (still waiting to hear back on the last one). All 3 of our NeurIPS submissions were rejected.
