The Gibson-Banks Center for Race and Law @law.umaryland.edu is one of 35 organizations that opposed funding for the Baltimore jail. We have work to do, but today’s news of no FY 27 funding for the jail is a step in the right direction. Thanks @conarck.bsky.social for consistent news coverage.
In 2025, the Education Department under President Trump dismissed thousands of civil rights investigations, focusing instead on investigations of alleged discrimination affecting White students, antisemitism complaints and policies regarding transgender students. https://wapo.st/4sp4YHX
What a catastrophe.
I’ve been reposting all of the crowd videos of today’s NO KINGS rallies because at some point they’ll try to say it didn’t happen.

“As a public university, we are stewards of taxpayer resources, and a payment of this scale would completely devastate our country’s greatest public university system as well as inflict great harm on our students and all Californians.” —UC President James B. Milliken

BREAKING: We're suing the Trump administration for detaining immigrants at the notorious new Everglades detention center, cruelly dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," in inhumane conditions without access to legal counsel.
It was my honor to work with distinguished lawyer colleagues on this statement of commitment to the principles that must undergird American democracy. It appears today as full page ad in the @nytimes.com & in papers around the country.

Reminder that I AM LATINA AND PROUD. I am the product of immigration - my grandmother was undocumented and entered the country from Mexico as a baby. My mother was a fierce, gorgeous Latina woman of Mexican and Spanish descent.
Gibson Banks Center for Race and the Law joined 80+ Asian American organizations and law centers in submitting an amicus brief opposing the federal executive order to ban birthright citizenship. The U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the cases today. bit.ly/AAsDefendBirthrightCitizenship
Because the reporting across outlets hasn’t mentioned it I want to stress that Justice Jackson referenced the courageous & resolute stance of federal judges J. Shelly Wright in Louisiana and Frank Johnson in Alabama who issued school desegregation orders in the face of “Massive Resistance” to Brown.
Former Maryland governor and Social Security chief Martin O'Malley speaks passionately into a microphone while standing above a crowd at a rally. He gestures with his left hand, pointing outward. Behind him, protesters hold signs that include messages like “HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY” and “Even the Introverts Are Here.”
A woman in a wheelchair smiles while holding hands with a woman standing beside her at a protest. Behind them, others hold signs that include “HANDS OFF MY SOCIAL SECURITY & MEDICARE.” A cardboard sign in front reads “HANDS OFF MY SSI!”
A masked protester wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap holds two yellow signs with black handprints. One reads “MY $,” the other reads “HANDS OFF.” Other demonstrators and protest signs are visible in the background.
A protester with their back to the camera holds up a handwritten sign that says “SEND MUSK TO MARS NOW!” amid a crowd. Other signs in the crowd include “HE MUST GO” and “HANDS OFF,” with an American flag also visible.
Former Maryland governor and Social Security chief Martin O’Malley fired up "Hands Off" protesters at SSA's headquarters in Baltimore County today.

Infuriating. I’m so sorry ED team. This inhumane treatment of you and other federal workers is unacceptable.
There it is. Raskin always on point.
