How do preservatives actually protect us from food-borne infections?

Mark Webber of @quadraminstitute.bsky.social takes us behind the scenes of their #Microbiology paper on the effects of common preservatives on Salmonella and how insights can help find healthier alternatives microb.io/4hMVhyc

The image was taken using the Deltavision Elite microscope with widefield and phase contrast microscopy on a 10X objective, then altered using FIJI. Changes were made to the LUT, as well as brightness and contrast.

Did you know? Marine bacteria such as Vibrio fischeri can form bioluminescent biofilms. These bacteria can form symbiotic relationships with hosts like the Hawaiian bobtail squid, and the glow can help camouflage the squid from its prey!

Did you know? Not all biofilms are bad. Biofilms actually play important roles in wastewater treatment, bioremediation and even producing electricity in microbial fuel cells!

Promotional poster for the "Norwich Pop Up" event featuring Ho Yu Liu from the Quadram Institute as a speaker. The title of her talk is: β€œExploring the essential genes for plasmid acceptance in E. coli and S. Typhimurium.” The poster includes a smiling photo of Ho Yu wearing glasses and a grey top. Behind her is an aerial view of the Norwich Research Park. Logos for "microbesNG PopUp ," the Centre for Microbial Interactions, The Sainsbury Laboratory, and GetGenome are displayed at the top left. A bold vertical pink text reads "SPEAKER" on the right side. The event is on 3 July at the John Innes Conference Centre. A registration link is provided: linktr.ee/microbesng.

We don't have any papers on conjugation inhibitors just yet as most of my work has been focused on identifying what we might be able to target. But perhaps once we have that information, then inhibitors that act on those targets could be explored. Hope that helps!

Super grateful to have had the opportunity to talk about some of my PhD work at the BSAC #ARMworkshops2024 yesterday! Thanks to everyone for the interest in my work - hopefully more exciting things to come from all this! 😊

ECR talks at BSAC AMR! First, @hoyuliu.bsky.social is using tradis to find genes essential for plasmid acceptance in E. coli. Many fundamental metabolic genes- but also efflux pumps may affect plasmid uptake & stability via impact on OM structure. Lovely, important fundamental microbiology #MicroSky
