We discussed the Iran protests and Argentina accountability with @gissounia.bsky.social
How are the current protests in Iran related to the 2022 ones? And what means are protesters using to get evidence out & fight for accountability?

The Oscar-nominated Iranian screenwriter Mehdi Mahmoudian was arrested after condemning the regime's crackdown on protesters, which director Jafar Panahi says represents the actions of a "failed state."
I am excited to co-chair International Law Weekend again this year! Stay tuned for the call for proposals. #ILW2026

Initially this episode was supposed to focus on the complaint we filed in Argentina in mid Dec & UN reform & impact on documentation bodies.
But then last month the Islamic Republic killed thousands of protesters in just two days…
Without meaningful accountability cycles of violence will continue.
Thanks for having me on and bringing attention to this critical impunity gap
Out Now:
The current protests in Iran are closely linked to the 2022 Women Life Freedom uprising. Gissou Nia explains a universal jurisdiction case in Argentina filed by women blinded in those demonstrations, and how evidence is being gathered now.

The United Nations’ #UN80 reform plan is being overwhelmed by counterproductive budget-cutting, write Myriam Bouazdi and Gissou Nia.
They outline the harmful effects on the UN’s #HumanRights work:

Went on @theworld.org with @shirinj.bsky.social to discuss the crime of enforced disappearance and the thousands of Iranian families that have not heard from their loved ones for weeks—many of whom joined last month’s protests, never to return.

An important message from my favorite human rights attorney @gissounia.bsky.social:
“If you are a journalist who normally does not wear a hijab then please do not agree to the mandatory hijab laws of the Islamic Republic just to score an interview with an Islamic Republic of Iran official.“
“One of those making the claim, UK-based Mahsa Piraei, told the Guardian “what is being pursued here is not revenge in a personal sense, but accountability and truth”. Her mother, Minoo Majidi, 62, was shot dead in September 2022.”
Universal Jurisdiction case launched in Argentina, into the Iranian government crackdown during the Women, Life, Freedom protests in 2022 against 40 named Iranian officials alleging crimes against humanity, including targeted blinding and murder: theguardian.com/world/2025/d... #Iran

Proud to be a part of this lawsuit against President Trump’s Executive Order targeting the International Criminal Court, which has broad and sweeping implications, including on free speech, for all of us who work with the Court. 1/4

The IFRC condemns the killing of eight Palestine Red Crescent Society medics in Gaza.
We are heartbroken. These dedicated humanitarians, killed while responding to the wounded, should have been protected. We mourn their loss and stand with the Palestine Red Crescent.

New from Rumeysa Ozturk's lawyer:
Rumeysa hasn't been accused of any crime & "DHS has not produced any evidence" that she did anything unlawful.
Rumeysa wasn't able to speak to her lawyer for 24+ hours & not until after she was in Louisiana — despite a court order that she not be moved from Mass.
