You’re very kind - I’m no longer fluent, as my skills have atrophied from lack of use. I think what’s most often missed even in good translations is the cultural context/ connotations of words. If you’re willing to slog through footnotes/end notes, you can scoop up a lot of that peripheral info

Guys, is this a form rejection or a (*slightly) tiered one 🤔 The encouraging last line has me puzzled, since they rejected my work after just 9 days 😬. I’ve never submitted to this place before, and don’t know their MO…
The book’s final lines evoke something of why it spoke to me in the early aughts:
“I long for the two of us to sing, once again, the lines of “Que sera, sera” together. And just because I’ve written this book, don’t think I’ve changed. I’m like I was back then, really.” - 3/3
This novel left me with a lasting impression of disenchantment and poignant beauty, although I no longer recall anything about the plot or the characters. My notes on the pages show the intensity with which I examined the language, noting tropes or strange vocabulary - 2/3
Preparing for my keynote speech at the recent Zone 3 Writers’ Festival got me nostalgic for the decade I spent immersed in Japanese language & literature. Shown here are the cover and pages of my beloved, much-marked copy of Murakami’s novel “Almost Transparent Blue.” - 1/3
Regrettably, I have been unable to access my clean, folded towels for more than a week now. 😂 🐈⬛ 💕 Happy Caturday 😻
On a lighter note, this one's just about systemic racism and the legacies of slavery, in the voice of a white Appalachian biker.
Inspired by a rural juke I used to pass during its busy hours, when I was trucking a night route one summer.
I cut out so much biker-nerd stuff.

Yeah, my kids basically lost their $h1+ when we saw this 😂 🤣
beyond delighted to share my new story "Even After You're Gone," fresh now with the lovely @bulbregion.bsky.social! check it out 🦇⚡
a totally nuts image made via Paint; it's just three different cropped screenshots of different bsky posts about my new story "Even After You're Gone" with The Bulb Region -- the posts are all compliments from different readers, things like "I loved this!" and "That is...fucked...up. Beautifully fucked up. Perfection." and "Holy Hell. I mean it as a compliment. I am very glad I read this. I can't remember what I was thinking about all morning beforehand!"
no love better than a reader's love

New readers on an old writer 😆 👓Recent medical tests revealed, to my surprise, that I am NOT (hormonally) in perimenopause😳 I have a fibroid. We shall see what the OB thinks we ought to do about it. And boy, if this ain’t peri, cannot WAIT to see what that’s gonna feel like 😂
The other marriage of mine that didn’t work out 😬

“Vera,” said the countess, turning to her older daughter, obviously not her favorite. “How is it you have no notion of anything?” Excerpt From War and Peace Leo Tolstoy, Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky https://books.apple.com/us/book/war-and-peace/id460819556 This material may be protected by copyright.
“I often think how unfairly life’s good fortune is sometimes distributed. Why has fate given you two such nice children (excluding Anatole, your youngest, I don’t like him),” she put in peremptorily, raising her eyebrows, “such lovely children? And you really value them less than anyone and are therefore unworthy of them.” And she smiled her rapturous smile.” Excerpt From War and Peace Leo Tolstoy, Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky https://books.apple.com/us/book/war-and-peace/id460819556 This material may be protected by copyright.
“The count is suffering both physically and morally, and it seems you have taken care to cause him as much moral suffering as possible.” “May I see the count?” Pierre repeated. “Hm! … If you want to kill him, to kill him outright, you may see him.” Excerpt From War and Peace Leo Tolstoy, Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky https://books.apple.com/us/book/war-and-peace/id460819556 This material may be protected by copyright.
I’m reading War and Peace, and you know, probably a lot more people would read it if they knew just how extremely cunty the dialogue is
Honored to have a little poem out today in Burial Mag. In the words of the EIC, “…this demolishing [ekphrastic] poem … stands entirely on its own: it’s called ‘phantom thread,’ and i like that it works as interpolation of the film AND as its own devastating object. don’t you dare miss it.”

Oh, thank you so much, James 🥹 Look forward to reading your piece this weekend 🙏 ♥️
I put out a new book. It’s got poetry and stories and a play in it. So if that’s your sort of thing then get yourself a copy. If it’s not your sort of thing then I can’t help you.

Semi-regular reminder that subway musicians are one of the coolest features of life in NYC. I think of them as urban beauty emergencies to borrow a phrase from @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social
"The results are astonishingly clear. On rewilded land, biodiversity surged across the board, with the number of bird species up 261%. The variety of bumblebee and butterfly species more than doubled, their abundance increased over 10x."
