Those killed were not charged, tried or sentenced. None had not even completed the alleged crime of smuggling drugs.
Lawmakers have said the cocaine on these boats was headed to Europe, not the United States.
So why is this being treated as normal?

U.N. experts and human rights advocates have described the killings as unlawful and extrajudicial. One world leader accused Trump of murdering a fisherman.
The U.S. is being accused of using the military to carry out law enforcement killings.

It is wild to me how quickly this story has shrunk to normal.
Since the first boat strike on Sept. 2, coverage has literally shrunk by many inches and columns, by inches and columns, from a major story to just a few graphs, even as the death toll has kept climbing.

The attacks are legally dubious and their effectiveness questionable, according to critics, some whom accuse the Trump administration of conducting extrajudicial killings with the operation.
The #US military has killed at least 11 people -- possibly 12 -- in four strikes of suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Pacific since Saturday.
Since the first strike on Sept. 2, the U.S. has killed at least 174 people and destroyed 51 boats.
The last #RocketLaunch near Jeju was a December 2023 solid-fuel rocket test by the Defense Ministry. Here is video I took from my window in Jungmun that night.

Jeju is trying to become a #space launch hub in Asia as it tries to diversify its economy. When I reported on the industry in 2024, Gov. Oh Young-hoon told me it could eventually account for 30% of the island’s regional GDP.
CBS NoCut News reported last month that the launch was planned for April 22. But so far, neither Jeju officials, the South Korean government nor #Hanwha appear to have publicly announced it.

Civic groups in #SouthKorea have launched a petition opposing a reported joint Hanwha Systems–Defense Ministry satellite launch off the coast of #Jeju.
I am reading his “Say Nothing” atm. Picked it up for research on my Jeju project. It is quite the book. Now I am going to have to get this one right away so it can sit on my bedside for about a year until I get through a wee bit of my backlog first.
The loss came despite an aggressive anti-EU and anti-Ukraine propaganda campaign. For weeks, #Budapest was plastered with anti-Semitic coded posters, portraying EU leaders demanding a handout and Zelensky as mocking Hungarians.
Even with support from the White House, the campaign failed.
Viktor Orbán is out.
After 16 years of seeping authoritarianism back into #Europe, Orbán and his far-right, Russia-aligned Fidesz party were decisively rejected by Hungarian voters.
With nearly all ballots counted, Orbán’s coalition took 38.4% to 53% for the center-right, pro-EU #Tisza party.
President Lee Jae Myung of #southkorea promotes “My Name Is,” a new #film about #Jeju Massacre (제주 4.3).
“Through this screening, we hope that we can all remember Jeju's pain and discover hope and courage beyond the wounds,” Lee said.
It’s been a beautiful day on #Jeju. Was out picking rocks and shells with my daughter for her friends to make art out of tomorrow and there was this bird, sunbathing. I sometimes forgot where I live with it so close to my nose because of my work.
Trump says U.S. forces will remain deployed around Iran until a “REAL AGREEMENT” is reached and fully complied with, as disputes deepen over whether the cease-fire covers Lebanon and whether Iran can continue enriching uranium.
My latest for UPI:
[BREAKING] The #UnitedStates and #Iran agreed to a two-week cease-fire. #Israel backed the move, but said it does not extend to Hezbollah in #Lebanon.
#Jeju Olle founder Suh Myung-Suk, whose trail network sparked a hiking craze on the island, has passed away. She was 68 years old.
As Washington announced the rescue of a downed fighter pilot in southern #Iran, the United States and South Korea launched a survey off northeastern South #Korea for three U.S. aircraft that crashed during the #KoreanWar.
I doubt many know about the airport being an execution site. I interviewed a pilot who used to fly the Jeju route daily. He said he doesn't think any pilot knows. 4.3 is so very complicated and affected each village differently.
State violence does not end when the killing stops, and the Jeju Massacre is not history. (7/7)
One has told me that they are resigned to the fact they will die and be buried while their brother will continue to be landed upon dozens of times a day by planes shuttling tourists to the island. (6/7)
Survivors I've spoken to have spent their whole lives searching for the remains of their brothers, fathers. All of them are old. Some are actively dying. (5/7)
Fifteen minutes away is the Jeju airport, beneath whose tarmac lies an unknown number of islanders massacred there during 4.3. But the cost of unearthing them appears too costly to the tourist industry to consider. (4/7)
As I write this, islanders within the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park are holding jesa before headstones marking the absence of graves. It's a cemetery for the more than 4,000 missing victims of the massacre. (3/7)
In my research for my book on the #Jeju Massacre, victims have shown me the ways they continue to be victimized. The clearest symbol of that ongoing violence may be Jeju International Airport. (2/7)
On this day more than most, I am reminded that there is no violence worse than state violence. Its power is arbitrary and overwhelming, and its damage does not end when politics declares it over. 🧵(1/7)
The most telling line in Donald Trump's threat to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is this:
"Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China -- which will eat Canada alive. We'll just get the leftovers."
That's all you have to know.
The remains were returned to their families on Jeju on Tuesday. I wish this was bigger news. The massacre is still an open wound on the island.
