awesome blog post! i've been slowly reading through @peterfrankopan.bsky.social's "the silk roads" and it's been insightful!

even though i did world history in middle school it was from a british POV, so it became rather euro-centric after the fall of the otoman empire.

'You Can't Defeat the Robots!': Baseball's AI Strike Zone Is Must-Watch Television MLB's ABS system somehow feels extremely human. It's not human vs robot, it's human vs human as judged by a robot.

it might've stemmed from political coverage (heads of states always seem to be quoted at face value) as companies have accumulated state-levels of wealth

just a hypothesis with no experiments :P

In Idaho, a trans person can be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted of felony using-the-restroom.

By comparison, simple assault is charged as a misdemeanor (up to six months in jail), and 2 DUI convictions gets you 10 days in jail in Idaho.

A tweet -- or whatever a tweet is called now -- saying that anti-trans locales will never displace Silicon Valley

I have been more or less silent on the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter, and even though the algorithm will prevent anyone from seeing it, I felt this needed to be said...

Book launch day! “Your Data Will Be Used Against You: Policing in the Age of Self Surveillance” is out.

Bluesky friends, I would be so grateful if you would buy a copy. And if you can’t afford it, could you at least share this announcement. Thank you. #BookSky

It's wild to me that higher ed leaders can tell themselves that institutional neutrality will get the job done and then you've got Hungarian ambassadors and Russian dissidents saying this is the way you aid authoritarianism

i'd be curious to know how you would handle classes and other cases were this metadata is not present, e.g., imported library that compiled without this metadata

i could see a compiler choosing what metadata to keep by looking at the source code, and a panic could make sense

would runtime reflection entail additional metadata attached to each class?

“The Middle East has become the deadliest place in the world:

- to be a medical worker
- to be a humanitarian
- to be a UN team member
- to be a journalist

And one of the deadliest to be a civilian.”

seeing lots of posts mis-spelling Purdue as Perdue

there's perdue farms, purdue pharma, and purdue university, and i think they are all largely unrelated

i guess my alma mater just gained notoriety outside of just shitting the bed in sports 🙃
