here's one of those insane, horrible connections of the contemporary era
the primary liaison between the UAE and the genocidaires in the RSF over this time has been Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan
the owner of Manchester City football club

Not so long ago I was told Drax provided 'green jobs' at its biofuel (tree-burning) power plant. They were then getting £2m EVERY DAY in govt subsidies & that was without CCS. Now subsidies are due to end they're turning to that other well-known job creator & climate change fixer - data centres!
‘The turn to militarisation, alongside diminishing low-carbon investment, will only make Europe less secure and more economically fragile.’
Rebekah Diski and Khem Rogaly on arms v. green energy in Europe, from the blog.

“Cuba’s crisis is part of the US ‘energy dominance’ strategy, using coercion and force to control energy supplies and, ultimately, Cuba itself.”
Cuba could break the US blockade with renewables — & the world should help pay for it.

I wrote about the debate around data center build-outs, whether AI is making life better right now and/or protecting US national security interests newrepublic.com/article/2089...
Alarmed by the grim symbolism of VW in talks with Israeli state-owned arms company Rafael, Khem Rogaly of @transitionsec.bsky.social and I wrote about European rearmament and ongoing subservience to US military and energy strategy for @lrb.co.uk
Such an extraordinary resource and the political education on Arab radicalism, the long reach of western imperialism and the centrality of Palestine that we all need in this conjuncture. The podcast was already monumental - thank you @thedigradio.bsky.social, Abdel Razzaq Takriti & all involved!
“Any regenerative project must also build a credible horizon of what is politically possible & ecologically necessary — a cultural politics that can plausibly be translated into power.”
@the-breakdown.bsky.social on how Reform’s fossil-fuelled nationalism exploits the energy transition.
Sparked by Richard Tice's plans for fracking as 'our patriotic duty', I wrote something with George Edwards of @zetkincollective.bsky.social about the appeal of Reform's fossil nationalism for @the-breakdown.bsky.social
“Companies like BAE Systems ... rely on public money although they are privately owned, with institutional investors benefitting from surging government spending and direct subsidies for research and development.”

As part of the @transitionsec.bsky.social series on military industrial complexes as economic, climate and geopolitical threats, I wrote about how trade unions are responding to rearmament, genocide and ecological catastrophe. Do check out the other essays!
🚨 NEW: Read @tobitac.bsky.social “Cold War on a Warming World” for sharp analysis of China’s economic development, its clean energy dominance and why Washington’s foreign policy response is a threat to global decarbonisation.

Excited to be a fellow @transitionsec.bsky.social with a bunch of brilliant people thinking about the intertwining of militarisation and climate breakdown. Launch event this eve and lots of great stuff to follow!
‘More than a hundred groups co-ordinated to try to shut DSEI down. There were banners from the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the Global Women’s Strike and Quakers for peace, among others.’
Rebekah Diski at the Stop the Arms Fair protests, from the blog: www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/se...
For the @lrb.co.uk blog, I wrote about DSEI, one of the world’s biggest arms fairs, which the UK hosts every 2 years. This year, protests drew attention to the companies profiting from genocide in Gaza, while Starmer met Israeli president Herzog at Downing St. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/se...
I wrote about David Lammy's newfound outrage over Gaza. Hard to swallow for those of us in his own constituency, where he and Haringey council have consistently ignored our demands for action: tribunemag.co.uk/2025/05/too-...
Larry Fink's 2025 letter:
we will solve distributional crisis of capitalism if you give me your savings so I can privatise every public good under the sun.
We shall call this democratizing investment.

I always struggle a little to explain my students why Marxists are right about freedom in the capitalist state. Jeff Bezos does it so much better.
