National Library Workers Day: Libraries Work Because We Do. April 21, 2026. ALA-APA logo

It's National Library Workers Day, our favorite day of #NationalLibraryWeek where we celebrate the hardworking, dedicated professionals who power possibility in our neighborhoods, our schools, and our places of higher learning.

Thank you, library workers - libraries work because YOU do! #NLWD26

When I was a child, teachers sat the best girl students next to disruptive boy students. The girls were responsible for keeping the boys calm so that the teacher could continue teaching.

This sort of emotional regulation by proxy, using girls and women to calm boys and men, still happens.

"We are not surprised that the White House FY27 budget zeroes out funding for IMLS and IAL. The president’s intentions for IMLS were clear last year with the executive order to dismantle IMLS and cut off its funding [...] ALA members have a solid track record of defeating the president’s threats, but we do not underestimate the lengths to which he will go to undercut support for America’s libraries. ALA is working to make sure decisionmakers continue to hear from library advocates.” - ALA President Sam Helmick

NEW: The President once again called to eliminate federal library funding in his federal budget proposal. We have been here before. And when we make our voices heard, we can overcome this again.

The solutions proposed for New Zealand's (and virtually every other country's) problems are always like:
"We need to make people work for more years"
"We have to cut back on services, I'm sorry, there is just no other way"
"We have to cut benefits for young people"

never:
"We need to tax the rich"

Trump's UCLA Settlement Proposal Reveals Massive Anti-Trans Attacks: Students And Faculty Fight Back It’s not only students and faculty who have something to lose—countless doctors, trans youth, and families could see health care vanish.

1. UCLA is in negotiations with Trump. Now we know the demands.

Trump wants a statement that UCLA does not recognize trans student identities, a ban on youth care at UCLA clinics, bathroom bans, and more.

Students are fighting back.

What Happened to the Smaller Agencies Trump Tried to Shutter?

As groups like the Institute of Museum and Library Services lose staff and grant funding, the consequences trickle down to colleges and universities. #HigherEd #EDUSky #AcademicSky bit.ly/4lxLcX9

A poster on a concrete wall features two bold illustrations stacked vertically. The top half, with a pink background, shows a large black fish chasing a scattered group of smaller fish. Below it, the words “DO NOT PANIC” are written in bold, capital letters. The bottom half, with a yellow background, shows the same small fish now swimming together in the shape of a large fish, facing the original predator. The caption below reads “ORGANIZE.” The image is a powerful call for collective action and solidarity, inspired by a famous 1960s political poster by artist Frank Cieciorka.

So this is my radical proposal for universities: Act like universities, not like businesses. Spend your endowments. Accept more, not fewer students. Open up your campuses and expand your reach not by buying real estate but by bringing education to communities. Create a base. Become a movement.

Alternatively, you can try to negotiate with a mafia boss who wants to see you grovel. When these negotiations fail, as they inevitably will, it will be too late to ask for the public’s support.

In other words: double down on our actual missions, abandon all the capitalist business nonsense we've absorbed over the years, and FIGHT.
