Fascinating short history, including how "Isaac Newton’s famous Waste Book is a rare example of a physical continuity between the two cultures of notetaking: humanist and scientific."

lol 2 days late is early 🫣
LLM consciousness discourse is a great way to see the diverse range of conditions for consciousness that different people assume
Anything to avoid the metric system 🌖🐕🚶🌭
This is unfortunately an issue that isnt going away
I'm not against AI for science code implementation - apart from being faster it probably also just makes fewer mistakes than most PhD students (it's definitely better than me).
The challenge is how (and in what form) to train people to oversee it
I Work Very Hard, And I Would Like To Try Cake By A Horse Hello. I am a horse. I work very hard at my job of being a horse. When humans say move the heavy thing, I move the heavy thing. When humans sit on top of me and pull on my head, I carry them where they want to go. The main food the humans give me is hay and oats. But I am thinking it would be nice to have a different food. I am thinking I would like to try cake. Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape. Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy. Please understand: I do not get money for doing work. I do not get to go inside the house. All I am either doing my horse job or standing in my pen or eating food off the floor. I always do these things. But I have never once gotten cake and I would like it very much. I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children. I am more helpful to the farm. Children do not move the heavy things like me or let anyone ride on them. And yet they get cake. Maybe the humans will realize this. Maybe they will say, "You know who deserves cake? That horse. That horse whose back we are always on." Every day I dream about what it will be like if I get to eat cake. Here is what will happen. First, I will walk to the cake and putt my nose at it like hrrfff to make and stomping my hooves to make sure it is not a snake. Then I will trot in a circle to show that I am a horse and I am large. After that, I will nuzzle the cake to …
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me.
It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."
Turns out the real treasure was the stupid shit we did along the way.
2026 sucks but at least we can watch space TV
The science ( knowing *which* models to fit, *why*, and what the answer means) still requires expertise. It didn't happen automatically.
But the implementation did. What are we actually training our students *for*? And are we teaching the right things?
We really need to start answering this. 3/3
The fun thing about preprints is how whenever you see a paper in print you’re like “wait wasn’t that published like 2 years ago? 🥲”
Great work! Happy to see it in print 😁
This one was a real shock scrolling through my timeline….
I think part of the reason why people find this controversial is that they read into it "therefore there is no difference". But as the prof for intro to philosophy said in the first year of my BA: "The fact that there are unclear cases does not mean there aren't clear cases"
The hardest part of science is posing the right question, not answering it.
Recognizing LLM-generated text isn’t just a skill—it’s a life sentence.
Not sure where codex is at now, but from what I hear the software engineers are all in on Claude code.
If by chatGPT you mean the chat window (not codex, the coding agent), then yes. The coding agents are a whole new ball game.
If you haven't claude coded up a cute little side project yet you should absolutely check that out ASAP.
I love how in the space of ~10 years the field has moved from “the brain can’t do gradient descent” to “which of the many possible ways of implementing gradient descent is the brain doing, in which circuits?”
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 is it true @grok??????
TBF never claimed to be civilized, just correct 😜
One day you should ask @repromancer.bsky.social his story about why Fahrenheit is better than Celsius. The logic is sound.
The fact that you guys use the wrong colors for left and right always puts me through a ringer.
This is the most insider shade ever and I’m here for it. #wormFly4pres2026🪱🪰
Biology is full of coconuts. 🥥
[please bear with me, posting through it]
We need to acknowledge that science has always emerged from a mess and a lot of misunderstanding. That is the constitutive character of the scientific process. Failures of understanding at the individual level can even be critical for collective progress. Science is a distributed activity.
Ah good point. It’ll be in the next version 😉
Now that I think about it, I do have a similar experience with email vs slack for research communication…
Curious if/how others address this in their labs. I don’t think Making Email Great Again is the solution?
