Stopping the race, we’d shorten it/enforce additional rest at checkpoints… which meant teams could focus on the safety and wellbeing of their teams.

Trail changed a week before the race, loss of a checkpoint a day before the race (due to the sad death of a community elder), and a severe snow storm the day of the race with blowing snow and huge drifts…

You’re very right. The forests used to have controlled burns to ensure regeneration, this was a massively devastating wildfire burn. They will recover.. already new growth appearing, green shoots of hope.
