Our education system just doesn’t cater to that sort of goal.
And beyond that, we don’t really create spaces outside of school for kids to sit down and enjoy a book.
We are more likely to fall into the societal push to remain busy, busy, busy.

A lot of opinions here…. Guess I’ll throw mine in there.
Education is systematically goal oriented. Reading an entire book is counter culture. It’s generally written with intent of being enjoyed and requires you to slow down.
I don’t see it as teachers fault or parents fault or whatever….
Bet it’s awesome but haven’t been brave enough to commit
You know how I know we are bad at evaluating volume status?
Because we say someone’s euvolemic then dialyze off 8 liters in 2 days and cure their hypertension.
Or participate in a forum like NephJC or listen to the the podcast.
Carry what you learned with you as you tackle more papers.
I’ve certainly learned a lot about critical appraisal from the NephJC podcast!
I agree with you for sure.
What do you think about reading the editorial (if there is one) after you have read the paper?
For those learning to read papers outside of an academic environment I suggest reading the editorial after to see what you missed or didn’t know to look for.

And don’t think about taking time off
Agreed. It’s also me being glib about my perspective as a privileged physician
For me, I can’t imagine eating that much processed meat (or meat in general).
For many Americans the only food they have access to and know how to prepare is processed meats and other ultra processed foods.
One hot dog a day seems like a whole lot of hot dogs
“The data showed that people who ate as little as one hot dog a day when it comes to processed meats had an 11% greater risk of type 2 diabetes and a 7% increased risk of colorectal cancer than those who didn't eat any.“

Not really. People with chronic conditions often choose to not have CPR performed because it often delays the inevitable and can prolong suffering while increasing trauma around their death.
Yes Mr LizardFish. Yes indeed.
I can’t get past the paywall but based on the comments what a joke.
We discuss this with patients all the time and many demand it. Whether that is good or bad is situationally dependent and not for me (or the New Yorker) to decide
