Gutting.

I don’t normally replace what I already have with upgrades (I like earlier versions for their own historical/geek/collectible merits too), but this is one I’m putting on my birthday wishlist. My ancient copy has been used so much, it owes me nothing now! ❤️

Right? Like, I just discovered Northern Irish fifteens, and now this!

Hairless animal/musky smell are very MR Jamesian-sounding details… But I wish I could tell you. I’d love to read it.

Not a bad idea at all.

You might enjoy (or “enjoy”) The Monk, too, if you haven’t read it yet. That’s the one that remains, in my mind, as the most garishly anti-Catholic EN Gothic novel I’ve ever read. 🤯

(CW for all the worst stuff, tho)

The 18C English Gothic novel that *wasn’t* anti-papist is a rare bird indeed. It’s fully one of the big tropes. 😂

Bigotry aside (it’s not great on Jews either, IIRC), I love that book so much. The…what, eight? nine? nested stories is sans pareil. ❤️

July 21 1935: The Führer orders a new reception hall and ballroom to "entertain foreign diplomats" at the Chancellery. Underneath the dance floor is an air raid shelter. A 2nd deeper bunker is built next to this in 1944, where he would spend his last days as the Reich collapsed.

Yes, always.

But this time, something just as sinister.

Bluesky says they’ve been dealing with a DDS attack since last night.

But fuck AI anyway, ofc.

What a new Gallup poll shows about young men's religious revival A new Gallup poll shows more young men in the U.S. now say religion is “very important” in their lives compared to young women.

Aaaaaand the theories about why are exactly what we suspect. apnews.com/article/reli...

Agreed. It puts members on record if a vote comes to pass. At the very least, it’s fodder for Bad Days for collaborators and cowards if/when there’s a political shift in your country. Force them into yes/no positions as much as possible. Make them sweat.

(I only noticed the error because I’m a huge Barry Lyndon fan—as, clearly, so is Herzog to at least some degree, because *that* track over *that* scene ain’t random. An absolutely gutting use of music, that.)

Currently revisiting a bunch of Herzog stuff I haven’t seen in *checks notes* 20-25 years, and somewhat annoyed there’s a misprint in the music credits for Echoes/Somber Empire (It’s Schubert’s Opus 100, two zeroes!) but as ever he’s forgiven, and quickly. ❤️ 📽️

Sigh, I didn’t even know AirPlay was a thing until I was watching a movie via my AppleTV device just now, and my screen froze to "AIRPLAY CODE/Chuck’s iPhone” but I do not know a Chuck or own an iPhone...

Turn it off in the settings, folks (and change your router login)!

Hey, look at Substack promoting Andrew Tate as the #1 new bestseller. The company's amoral leadership & backers will platform anyone, even ludicrously toxic rapists & human traffickers.
