I am just so unsurprised by this
I can't believe he describes NOT using AI to write as "retrograde and fearful". Does he even ... like ... enjoy writing?
🤦♀️ Thanks John! My only defence for such an undergrad-level oversight ("undergrad oversight" is a weird phrase) is that I've been moving house.
A photograph of a bookshelf holding a lot of vintage Penguin paperbacks, a shelf of Penguin Classics poetry, and then a shelf of miscellaneous poetry from other publishers
Have just moved house and I'm very pleased with my new 'Penguins and Poetry' bookshelf

Clippy popping up asking "are you not entertained?"
I saw an advert for Copilot recently and it literally showed someone using it in a business negotiation 🤔
The review is paywalled but I'm so excited about this book – Gwendoline Riley is absolutely amazing

Keats question: in the final lines of 'Ode on Melancholy' –
"His soul shalt taste the sadness of her might
And be among her cloudy trophies hung."
– why are the trophies "cloudy"? My edition glosses only the hanging of trophies (in temples, cathedrals etc.) and not the adjective.
oh thank you! hope you enjoy 😌
"If AI handles the gruntwork, the learning pathway disappears"
along with, potentially, the self-esteem pathway, the deep and lasting reward pathway, the ability to create anything worth someone else's attention pathway (&c. &c.)

A cartoon by Stephen Collins showing a young bird being embarrassed by his parents' birdsong – which is here depicted as an unambiguous call for sex. The young bird finds this gross and also old-fashioned; he prefers to use Tinder.
Quite a while ago now (and yes I know almost no female birds sing) but ...
My books bring to light the alienation that was already present in my readers
Greg Davies: Great task, well done. Didn‘t eat a thing.
Persephone: Thank you.
Alex Horne: Ah. Well. Let’s take another look at that pomegranate.

I totally understand the disadvantage of being outside a university system with library subscriptions etc. But did you know you can read 100 articles a month for free on JSTOR, which collects a huge number of academic journals? I discovered this recently and it's a godsend
Aside from the environmental/plagiarism issues of LLMs, I honestly think you may do your ideas a disservice by putting them into an LLM, since they are proven to distort and even totally invent references to other people's work
I saw a particularly optimistic (/foolhardy) brimstone butterfly today!
for some reason the left (goldman sachs) refuses to take AI seriously
FYI, Academia.edu has changed its terms of service to give an irrevocable worldwide license for anything uploaded to its site to be used for generative AI. I do not consent to this and have pulled all my papers.
1Died (alas!) on this day in 1455, Fra Angelico, the Angelic Friar. Here, Annunciation from the 1440s on the stair landing at the convent of San Marco, Florence.
