and reprimanding my hayatochiri self

My head was fixed in kuzushiji mode that when I saw the second character in the highlighted bit, all I could see was 己 as you often see in 記

But it's actually just a poorly written 区 duh

I said “indicates” rather than “always means” because there are exceptions ofc

But you can judge based on context such as “well, the scribe of our document doesn’t connect characters but rather keeps them separate” and “our scribe has usually rendered this character in this way” etc

So the key piece here turned out to be the knowledge that "outward flick at the end indicates it's a 口 at the bottom"

So it certainly pays to know the shape of basic characters

And after learning 倉敷 is an abbreviation of 倉敷料 I look that up

And find its basically what we'd call today 倉庫保管料 which makes very much sense in the context of the passage

(Context being the ultimate decider when it comes to deciphering)

That leaves possibilites 合, 含, 舎 and 倉

I check the characters in the 人 section of the 漢字くずし方辞典 dictionary just to be sure, but obvs it's 倉

So I bring out the 広辞苑 and look up 倉 and lo behold, there's 倉敷 -- not a word I know but certainly looks exactly like our word

But it has 2 characters
And I was confident about the makeup of the first character so I started there

It has a hitogashira 𠆢 and kidna looks like 會
But it flicks outwards not inwards at the end, so its not 日 but 口

well sure in that case u’re kinda stuck, but thats all the more reason to read already transcribed documentary collections, coz that helps inform ur deciphering

i say “it turned out to be” and thats probs the jp habit of turning things into the 3rd person
