In the 2024 Amtrak Long Distance study, the FRA proposed a new LD Amtrak route connecting Houston to Denver:

Hoosiers are getting relief because Indiana is governed by stupid people.
Apparently rerouting it through Dallas was more faster according to Amtrak at the time, by how much? Idk
As of a few years ago It was just a transfer to start and eventually it would run all the way to my understanding, but the Windsor station location makes that difficult
Routes Includes in the NGS: (2/2)
Splitting the Crescent at Meridian
Rerouting the International
Service to Mexico (Monterrey)
Silver Service along the FEC line in Florida
Extending the Silver Star to Boston via Springfield
Chicago - NYC service via Ontario
Reroute of the International thru Detroit
Routes included in the NGS: (1/2)
Reroute of the Sunset LTD through DFW
Service to Louisville & eventually Nashville (Happened but only to Louisville until 2003)
Service to Janesville & eventually Madison (Happened but only to Janesville lasting 1 year)
Service to Fond Du Lac
Service to Des Moines
It'll only go as far as Windsor for a transfer to VIA iirc
A few routes (LA - Las Vegas, Denver - Fort Worth and Boston - Portland ME) weren't apart of NGS, but only one happened and still exists today, the Downeaster which was extended beyond Portland to Brunswick ME in the 2010s. The other routes lacked the funding to be created
In 1999/2000 Amtrak proposed numerous new routes under the "Network Growth Strategy" Very few where implemented and the few that where didn't last long. Such routes included a new cross country luxury train, rerouting the International through Detroit and service to Monterrey Mexico:

Metrolink has a budget deficit - caused in part by Metro and OCTA's decision to cut support - that could make temporary service cuts permanent for the next four years, just in time for the Olympics and the gulf crisis. OCTA and Metro need to hear from you! calelectricrail.org/metrolink-is...

RTD would pay $156 million, plus annual operating expenses of $10 million to $12 million, under a deal that would allow Front Range Passenger Rail “starter service” — linking Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Loveland and Fort Collins — to begin by January 2029, state officials announced today
"Amtrak CoCo" or "Amtrak Colorado Connector" doesn't roll off the tongue very well lol.
Can't believe this lost to "Colorado Ranger"
Colorado has voted to name the proposed Fort Collins - Denver - Pueblo train. "CoCo" (Colorado Connector) Sorry but that name is so fucking ass

For those that missed the metro board committee meeting today: Karen Bass is officially moving full steam ahead on trying to ratfuck what would be the highest ridership light rail line in the country next week, over unscientific tunneling concerns identical to fred rosen's in bel air.

Updated South Shore Line future service concept as proposed by the Northwest Indiana RDA. The plan proposes two new lines and 12 new stations, as well as an extension to the Monon Corridor. This plan does not necessarily guarantee the NICTD will include all aspects in their 20 yr plan.

If he's going to get a national profile on the strength of a younger woman's campaign, I'm going to come out and say it: during his short-lived tenure as a math professor, Biss had an inappropriate romantic relationship with one of his undergraduate students. I was that student.

Also as of 2025 Champaign is the 2nd busiest Amtrak station in the state, Bloomington/Normal in a close 3rd!
I'm assuming the routing would be through Peru, the bill language doesn't identify a specific routing, but I'd personally route it through Bloomington.
and yes that is hourly service to NYC, Atlanta and Toronto. Very ambitious but frequencies like that on such long services would likely require very fast HSR.
