This @ukevaluation.bsky.social blog
reflects on applying developmental evaluation in two different programmes at @healthfoundation.bsky.social.

In this blog, we look at insights and recommendations from Carer's Trust on how changing the way we talk about unpaid care could help increase support for investment and reform, which have emerged from a project we supported alongside @oxfamgb.bsky.social.

HEALTH DATA RESEARCH SERVICE We are inviting applications for the inaugural Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the newly established Health Data Research Service (HDRS). The health data research service (HDRS) was announced by the Prime Minister in April 2025 and will be a new Government owned company set up to deliver a world-class service that will transform access to the UK's health data. This is an ambitious and unprecedented initiative backed by £600m of funding from UK Government and the Wellcome Trust which will seek to make the UK's health data assets interoperable and securely available to researchers to support innovations in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Here’s one of those ‘fix the plumbing’ things that policymakers tend not to get credit for. Govt + @wellcometrust.bsky.social are setting up structures for improved health research. They are now looking for a Chair (£50k) and CEO (£299k). Spread the word on this

DHSC has now published its proposals to regulate (or rather bar) #NHS managers. In this @bmj.com paper, @suziebailey.bsky.social @chrisham.bsky.social & I argue that regulation needs to be accompanied by wider changes to professionalise, train & support leaders:

New 📈✍️- we're hearing a lot about AI decimating graduate jobs. But the data paints a more complicated picture on what's behind the fall in entry-level roles

Policy exchange, backed by Sajid Javid, think we need to switch the NHS funding model to social insurance, and introduce new charges for NHS services, like to see a GP

These are not new ideas, but they are bad ideas
A thread with some evidence
A few excerpts from my evidence to the Public Administration Select Committee today making the case for: more transparency of evidence underpinning policy, better evaluation of major government projects and better researcher access to data
