Text reads: Four-Week Workshop: The Alongside Everything Poem, June Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 PM Eastern.

How do we write about wonder during a time of crisis? How do we acknowledge suffering while honoring joy? And how can we write coherently about a world that seems to be pulling our attention in a million directions at any given moment? In this four-week workshop, we’ll work on writing poems that lean into, rather than away from, these questions and contradictions.

Workshop-style discussion, weekly readings, line-level and conceptual feedback from instructor on one poem per week, and optional poem prompts. Caps at 10 participants.

In Those Years

Adrienne Rich

In those years, people will say, we lost track of the meaning of we, of you we found ourselves reduced to I and the whole thing became silly, ironic, terrible: we were trying to live a personal life and yes, that was the only life we could bear witness to

But the great dark birds of history screamed and plunged into our personal weather They were headed somewhere else but their beaks and pinions drove along the shore, through the rags of fog

where we stood, saying I

This Is How We Keep Going

By the surf, a mussel shell
wedged into wet sand, edge-up.
Someone could cut their foot on that,
I thought, and turned it flat,
while behind me the entire beach
rippled with mussel shells.

Seems like a good day to share this poem, originally published in About Place journal. Here's to turning over the mussel shells.

Haha--yes! I've definitely learned some stuff from it (though it's maybe 1/3 Big News, 1/3 Interesting Stuff, and 1/3 Games/Puzzles). Also, bonus: excellent spot-the-difference pictures.

I Wonder if the Guy Who Catcalled Me in the Blockbuster Parking Lot
When I Was 15 Ever Thinks About That
--Catherine Pierce

When the Jeep revved up

what I saw was three or four or thirty guys
laughing three or four or thirty heads of blond hair
mouths of white teeth and
one of them yelled out something
about my ass or taking me for a ride	I don’t know

because it’s been 30 years but what I do
remember is that I spun around and said Fuck off

middle finger raised like a flare gun

and it was not the first time
I’d felt the hot fizz of fury but it was
the first time I’d uncorked it and I remember
how his face slackened and the mouths
said ooooh and the blond heads
drove away in the cartoon-yellow Jeep

and when I got back in the car
where my parents and sister had been waiting
while I returned the VHS tapes

my mother said What’s so funny because
I couldn’t stop laughing and I said
Nothing which was true	nothing
was funny at all I was laughing
because as I’d let my rage rise

Darling
Almost immediately,
in our first moments
on this planet, we learn
to turn our faces
toward what we desire.
We spend our lives
repeating this gesture.
This morning, a late snow,
and I lift my eyes
to the icy sky.
Save this under beauty.
Save it under hope.

One of three short poems by me in the new issue of Smartish Pace.
