My favorite is when he corrects people’s pronunciation. “It’s not Frasier, it’s Fraser, like eraser but with an F.”
True story, but I was the only American group member he specifically allowed to call him Sir Fraser since I was accustomed to replying “yes Sir” or “no Sir” (Texas upbringing) and Knighthood isn’t a US title. Otherwise his reply would normally be, “yes Sir, no Sir, three bags full Sir”.
At least in the physical sciences where our terminal degree is the PhD.
I think context is pretty important in its usage but it’s worth noting that Doctor to refer to PhDs certainly predates its usage to refer to physicians. In this particular case, given the AP journalistic style in place, Professor Stoddart would also have conveyed similar recognition.
