All post docs should be longer than one year. Especially as the academy broadens to include non-traditional students who can’t uproot everything in their life for just one year. This short amount of time hinders access to important mentorship and extended learning opportunities. #academicsky

A grant proposal sounds nice, what great way to practice that skill! But 2-3 hours of grilling sounds awful 🫣Having a page limit was the hardest part for me. At first I thought there was no way I was going to get to at least 48 pgs, but it was easier than I thought lol.
What are quals like for you? I think it is so interesting learning how other fields do it. I had to answer a question from each of my committee members in 12-15 pgs and then do an oral defense.

Thank you for sharing this! I think this part of grad school needs to be talked about so much more. Coming from a practice background instead of an academic one was a real eye-opener for me and made me feel so completely lost at times.
I definitely can’t swing or spin anymore. I also can’t watch my kids play video games without getting nauseous! I wonder if is a combo of issues for me, but the fact that this happens to a good amount of people is super interesting!

Not at all! Funding has everything to do with the specific department you apply to and the broader universities policies around funding students. But I agree with others, don’t go unless they have funding!
