I was only able to watch a few minutes but I got chills... It's amazing to me how many times Umm Kulthum has been the music I _needed_ to hear. Thanks for the reminder, Jay.
to clarify- I didn't spend that much because records were cheap then.
Can't imagine a more perfect decoration for celebrating this cursed country than this hot dog couple cooking their offspring,
I spent many many hours in the Berklee location in the 80's... every saturday for four years. learned a lot and didn't spend that much. Glad to hear he's still in business.
grim
Congratulations to @melvingibbs.bsky.social on the new book. Can't wait to read. Really enjoyed this pod...
I'm _very_ biased but I listened to the entire record all the way through this morning and I think it's a masterpiece. Wendy is a genius and it's a true honor to be part of their musical world. I don't think they look at this app anymore so I feel ok saying that.
it's real! probably more of an IRL conversation... have you seen the conversations about what's been going on at Berklee? was in the globe yesterday I think. we're not at that point- yet.
maybe you mean the _other_ side though, which is much less simple.
It's not complicated. I talk about AI tech in class (Suno for example) and they say "I hate this."
this is what the admins pushing AI on us in higher ed don't understand- our students (mostly) _hate_ AI.
It’s Hollywood film music, so it’s fundamentally different from music that has its own integrity in time and all other factors imo. To me the ethical issue is whether or not the assistants/collaborators are fairly credited and compensated.
yes I think Judd had this right when he said Zimmer Inc. "Hans Zimmer" is a corporation in the same way that "Ralph Lauren" is.
People. I’ve never been less sure I know what “good music” is. But this… is incredibly beautiful.
Happening right in front of us
I went to SXSW a few times in late 90's/early 00's. Made some lifelong friends, heard incredible music (let me tell you about the Daniel Johnston gig on leftover sets from Midsummer Night's Dream in a Masonic temple) and generally had a blast. This sounds nothing like that. Pretty sad!
True.
my friend, colleague and bandmate Lautaro Mantilla just started a 12 hour long piece here... check it out... www.youtube.com/live/F6wt3KF...
Not to be overly dramatic, but you can hear capitalism ripping the heart out of human creativity here. I guess thanks to Kyoko for providing such a clear example of how sad all of this is. Make sure to listen to the OG tracks at the bottom of the playlist (maybe listen to them first).
Heathers - unwatchable now IMO
this is the only CD I ever released on my short-lived label... wasn't expecting to see anyone post this today! some trivia: the music series at alt coffee evolved into tonic. without the scene documented on this compilation, NYC music history would be quite different.
Congratulations Wendy!
“dream baby dream” should be next in the medley.
Am I hallucinating or is the White House pianist really playing “somewhere over the rainbow” while they wait for you know who? Someone should flag this for a future Adam Curtis doc.
I recently watched "Victims of Sin" on criterion- outstanding! Noir melodrama musical with Perez Prado...
outstanding day to work on taxes. really feels amazing.
Solid advice. I like listening to it in spring with the windows open. RIP a true artist.
