“AI can never be AI without humans. It is not artificial intelligence. It’s African intelligence...We are training our own death. We train ChatGPT and it’s killing us slowly.”
Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. Now, they're fighting back.

Anybody know of a really good explainer re security for organizing groups (tech and otherwise)? Maybe @violetblue.bsky.social or @margaret.bsky.social ??
I have spent my entire morning trying to get assistance from @marylandconnect.bsky.social I've now been on hold for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Does anyone actually work there or you just collect paychecks and let people go without health insurance?
New from me:
Elite law firms, multiple media outlets, the D.C. attorney general, and a group of parents accused a teacher of molesting 15 kids. They were wrong.
This piece is two-and-a-half years in the making. And as you'll see, it took some incredible turns, even as I was reporting it.
ICE agents in Chicago are adopting family separation methods developed within the U.S. family policing system, reflecting broader state violence tactics linked to government enforcement.
My latest for @thenation.com compares my recent Covid hospitalization with prisons’ lack of testing & treatment and, in some places, outright gaslighting www.thenation.com/article/soci...
the imaginary of the entire managerial class is that everything of worth comes from ‘ideas’ when in fact it comes from *doing things*
Bottom line. Think about your safety AND everyone you know that might not need their comms/photos/home address gifted to cops
In the second case, burner doesn't mean untraceable, just that it contains little to no data & you can toss it if compromised. Using passwords isn't a guarantee they can't get into your phone and you don't know what BS they are going to go after ppl with.
There are 2 things 1. Easy identification of who was at an event & 2. Having law enforcement own ur phone and data. Avoiding No. 1 is harder & requires discipline/cash phone purchases etc. No. 2 means having a phone without ur AND your friends data ready to gift to some cop.
I agree that tomorrow is low risk, but the no burner phone necessary is not the best advice for everyone. Think about your risk factors AND those of the ppl you know. 1 of 4
State troopers in riot gear just plowed into the crowd, started arresting protesters and clergy.
The responses to this tool are a great way to find new ppl to follow. So thanks for that, I guess
wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...
this week's post is something i've been thinking about for a long time. it's called "all of us imperfect comrades: or, an army of fuckups cannot lose"

The Supreme Court’s majority right wing indicated in oral arguments that they think racism is over on the same day that the vice president defended the “I love Hitler” guy, and that the NYT reported that the current administration plans to accept only white, English-speaking refugees.

Currently on a flight to Japan watching a Pentagon Assistant Press Secretary (Riley Podleski) work on a document in the open on her laptop. She spent the last hour copy and pasting headlines from articles critical of the Administration’s hostility toward the 1st amendment.
The flotilla carrying Jewish Currents reporter Emily Wilder has been captured by the Israeli military. Please contact Emily's senators and representatives—Adam Schiff, Alex Padilla, and Jimmy Gomez—and urge them to advocate for her safe release from Israeli detention
This is an incredible headline since, when I was in Miami in the 90s, LGBTQIA+ were being driven from South Beach by club raids and moving into Wynwood and displacing previous residents.

A person wearing glasses, with their hair pulled back sits at a desk and looks at a screen.
A person adjusts a piece of art hanging on a wall.

Indiscriminate ICE arrests have left Baltimore’s immigrant communities in a constant state of fear and anxiety baltimorebeat.com/indiscrimina...
Nobody should ever be in a situation where they don't have the resources and support they need. Safe haven laws will not fix that. But neither will criminalizing ppl who feel they've run out of options.

I’ve received multiple death threats + doxing (including my home address) directly following harassment from Turning Point USA, Jack Posobiec, Andy NGO, + Fox News which called me an antifa ‘financier.’
I have been forced to move my classes online.
If journalists want to talk, DM me or reply here.
Mark Bray is a brilliant scholar and by all accounts a caring and wonderful educator, and is now moving to Europe because the fascists doxed him and his family
Feels pretty huge that he’s forced to do this—the harassment was bad in ‘16 but I don’t think he’s ever felt compelled to leave the country
Support a great cause at a great store!
