He doesn’t side with anyone, and ultimately, he works only for himself. He justifies it. He believes what he’s doing to be the right thing given the circumstances, which is the true essence of individuality in Gundam.
That’s why lines like this one are so interesting, Char doesn’t consider that he’s betrayed anyone because he’s always been true to his goals.
He uses everyone around him to his convenience, he twists the narrative and tries to justify his own actions, the saddest thing is that it sounds like he’s not trying to convince those around him, but himself.
Char’s hypocrisy and maniacal tendencies obviously do not end there, given that at the end he still decides that, AFTER ALL he can’t forgive the Zabis, once again shifting his goal in such a fickle way. Char is untrustworthy!
He’s the only one who refuses they were both to blame for her death. And when he’s confronted by this fact, then he TRIES to get him to join him, when he would’ve joined him if Char hadn’t tried to kill him first, all while using LALAH’S name.
Even when Lalah’s ghost tells them that Newtypes aren’t meant to kill each other, he completely disregards her words. Lalah doesn’t want them to fight, but Char is throwing an insane tantrum because he can’t let Amuro go.
unlike in 0079, he sees Amuro as an equal).
He starts looking down on Amuro from the moment he killed Lalah, even though he's aware that he cannot best him in combat.
There’s no chivalry, there’s no fairness, Char’s grudge is so deep that he was willing to lure Amuro just so they could be on even grounds, showing his immaturity (if anything, it’s a nice touch that in CCA he WANTED to even the field, it could be pride or proof that,
followed Char onto the battlefield because he refused to let go of his grudge against the Zabis, somewhere along the way Lalah manifested Newtype abilities, and this became an object of fascination for Char due to his father’s beliefs.
Char refuses to accept any other point of view, because he falls into the pit of refusing to acknowledge that he’s as much of a victim of the war as Amuro, if not even more. He shifts blame and pins it all on Amuro, when the truth is that the most likely outcome is that Lalah
At this point, his resentment towards Amuro for Lalah’s death is his driving force; he cares only for avenging her death while trying to justify this as Amuro having become “too dangerous”, when he’s deflecting his guilt and trying to cope by calling it an inevitability.
is, Char is unable to accept this and would rather fight Amuro.
their situation and attempting to use logic as an excuse.
His motivating factor for the majority of 0079 is revenge against the Zabi family, and yet by the time Amuro is willing to set his own grudge aside and recognizes who are the ones who will make everyone suffer the most
Char in 0079 is so wonderful because when you look at his actions post-Lalah’s death you realize that he’s exactly the same as he is in CCA, a pathetic selfish man that’s caught up in his own feelings while trying to justify them by any means necessary, twisting the reality of

worst of it, but even I don't feel competent enough to open that can of worms given that I haven't read the novel yet. 😭

Amuro stops being an individual and starts becoming a symbol, but the man is still there, suppressed even when he wants to explore the idea of Newtypes in full. Because those ideologies can be dangerous to the system.

doesn't end with 0079, and despite the bittersweet ending of the anime/movies, Amuro's life in paper goes on.
The few pieces of context that you're given as a viewer paint a picture that doesn't need to be seen to understand the nature of Amuro's life up until he's (...)
