My PhD viva is coming up next week and preparations have been made all the more enjoyable 1) by the wonderful PGR community at Sheffield and 2) by @nathanielsablan.bsky.social’s puppy Otis trying to eat the custard creams whilst I practice my responses.

I wonder if he likes e-petitions?

He would start an e-petition that lets him eat more custard creams

To provide extra clarity, white British people

It's very disingenuous to argue that this is a product of immigration (without seeing the wider context, I assume this is what he is doing). When I go to football matches, it's disproportionately white people promoting the violence

Super excited to see the second paper from my PhD now published!

I find that making MPs' pay and expenses more salient significantly reduces political trust. Raising awareness of the regulator mitigates this effect when mentioning pay, but does not improve trust when expenses are mentioned.

Why the University of Sheffield’s problems are made in Sheffield University management claims the current financial situation is entirely down to external factors. The evidence suggests otherwise.

Great article from @sheffielducu.bsky.social on how, despite what university leadership might suggest, the data clearly shows any financial issues at the institution are not a result of 'sector-wide' problems, but a result of their mismanagement. Please read!

Not only was Diogo part of the Wolves team that I am most fond of, but always was such a hardworking player who seemed down to earth. Truly sad news

What is interesting about this polling, from my own research, is just how widely accepted and agreeable these types of changes are. From defenders of the institution broadly as it is, to those more critical of the House. Yet...

Sending solidarity and a donation to the hardship fund of @newcastleucu.bsky.social on the day they are hosting a national @ucu.org.uk demo. They are an inspiration for the action we all need to take to resist this vandalism of the higher education sector #stopthecuts.

2: I have a theory that a large part of the growth of the English Premier League, is because, in games like Football Manager, the English league system is the most fun challenge to undertake. You can work your way up three competitive leagues before facing 'the final boss' so to speak

Two thoughts on this.

1: Gaming is potentially at a bubble point, with AAA games becoming more and more expensive to make (see work of @jasonschreier.bsky.social). Not taking it seriously means that the UK could suddenly be missing an industry in which it is considered one of the world leaders.

It’s really time in British politics we had a discussion about how political elites remaining on X are being exposed to increasingly extreme/fringe views but are completely unaware of it.

I really love this paper and it gets to one of the main obstacles I had to overcome when starting my PhD.

It felt hard to tap into how people had actually done their research and I felt like I had to muddle through (with support of peers) to get to how to *do* research

Congratulations #CPFC! πŸ†

Did you know, Crystal Palace Park hosted the F.A. Cup Final 21 times between 1895 and 1914, with crowds often over 100,000.

Then as now, history is made at the Palace.

Britain has one of most difficult voter registration processes, report finds UK system makes it a β€˜real outlier’ among liberal democracies, according to study examining 62 countries

UK has a comparatively difficult registration process.

Our comparative analysis of registration difficulty in 62 countries is timely as Labour consider introducing automatic voter registration.
