Looking back on #InequalityConference2026: inspiring keynotes, the In_equality Research Award, engaging talks, fresh insights from the satellite program, and a vibrant social program in Konstanz. Thanks to everyone who joined us-we’re already looking forward to the next conference! @uni-konstanz.de
It’s a wrap! Over the weekend, we discussed #blame games in IOs, their protagonists, strategies, determinants, and consequences for #legitimacy and #accountability with a view of beautiful Lake Starnberg.
Very happy to share new research in @ejprjournal.bsky.social w/ my brilliant PhD student & former colleague @madeleinesiegel.bsky.social (new to bsky!): doi.org/10.1017/S147.... We ask whether the winner-loser gap in democratic satisfaction also exists among non-citizens without voting rights.
Someone compiled all of the Calvin and Hobbes strips about Calvin’s polls of his Dad, which is proof that good people do exist on the internet

The index of consumer sentiment isn't broken; models that try to predict it just don't have the right input variables. I fix that and find that, yes, high nominal price levels explain why the vibes are so off. It's the prices, stupid

I think that as economists we should be a lot more concerned that everyone feels like they've got poorer when the data show they haven't. We certainly shouldn't just be assuming that the customers are wrong, rather than that we're no longer measuring things that are most relevant to wellbeing
:/ Next time! @dvpw.bsky.social
There's lots of people more affected by yday's news but seeing Orbán concede has been a dream for me since I moved to Hungary to study in 2013 & I was not confident I'd see this happen.
I have lots of reservations about Magyar but I'll remember yesterday as a day of joy.
Reading recommendations⏬
For years, but especially in the last few months, I have been trying hard to imagine what it will feel like seeing Orban decisively defeated. I just couldn't. And yet here we are: it is truly and well over. I have more reservations about Peter Magyar than I could say in 300 characters or a thread...
(1/9) Can the EU be seen as more legitimate through procedural reforms? The lead candidate system for president of the European Commission was one such attempt.
In a new article, @acgoldberg.bsky.social, @pieterdewilde.bsky.social and I have sobering results:

🧵 New report just dropped 🚨 "Fractured Reality: How Democracy Can Win the Global Struggle Over the Information Space" — from the EU Joint Research Centre, led by Mario Scharfbillig and I. A landmark read for anyone working on disinformation, platforms & democracy. 👇

🧵 Excited to share my new book w/ @hildecoffe.bsky.social : "Different and Unequal? Gendered Political Participation in European Democracies" — with @universitypress.cambridge.org Elements in Gender and Politics (open access!)
TLDR? Women don't just participate less. They participate *differently*

🌐 Voters now identify as winners and losers of globalisation
⚖️ @nilssteiner.bsky.social, Matthias Mader & Harald Schoen
explore how citizens’ perceptions of themselves as “winners” or “losers” of globalisation are increasingly structuring political competition.
Last week, we (@clandwehr.bsky.social, my colleague Leonard and I) had the joy of welcoming some great colleagues working on the topic of democracy to Mainz, for the concluding workshop of our project "Conceptions of Democracy among Citizens and Political Elites". Thank you for three wonderful days!
Great to see this go live 👇
As part of the EPSS Diversity Committee, I’m especially excited about this mentoring program—open to all EPSS members, both as mentors and as mentees.

📊 How powerful are polls in influencing election outcomes?
🗳️ @krausewe.bsky.social & @christinagahn.bsky.social examine how election polls can shape voter behaviour, from bandwagon effects to strategic voting, and why their influence is more complex than it first appears 🤔
Any chance that you ran some interaction terms with education (as a proxy for cosmopolitanism) or have other variables in the survey (beside the ones indicated in the appendix) that may allow for such theoretically informed moderation effects? /3 & end
In my reading, most of the recent literature on #scapegoating / #blaming would argue that the strategies work for supporters of the communicating actors, but may even have contrary effects on those opposed to these actors or on those being high in cosmopolitanism / already in favor of IOs. /2
Highly interesting paper - congrats! But as you asked researchers for delving more into the conditions under which #scapegoating is successful: a lot of the lit on the topic already suggests (& tests) a moderation effect of characteristics of those receiving the communication. /1

@andduer.bsky.social and @robert-a-huber.bsky.social argue that (changes in) trade flows and regions’ economic structures matter for political outcomes.
Regions’ trade competitiveness affects legislators’ trade attitudes and incumbents’ chances of re-election

This is a really cool initiative by @epssnet.bsky.social - spread the news!

Exciting news: @hajoboo.bsky.social will take over as Editor-in-Chief of CCR @computationalcommunication.org from June 7. Hajo is a dream candidate to take over and I have no doubt CCR will continue to flourish under his leadership. Welcome!

@urisohn.bsky.social - liked the post a lot, but does the stata command really is "...,cov(hc3)" or should it read "...,vce(hc3)"?
I've just made live the updated website that accompanies my R book (www.discovr.rocks) - it's mostly finished: almost all of the chapter solutions/task solutions are done, data are live, updated info about the `discovr` package of interactive tutorials, and it's had a face lift.
