Big Oil companies have lied for DECADES about the "catastrophic" dangers of their fossil fuel products, and are now "afraid of being held to account for their own lies," says @govjayinslee.bsky.social.
Big Oil must not be above the law.
The AI economy looks...really precarious. So @matteowong.bsky.social & I did a bunch of reporting to try to figure out what happens when a potential bubble collides with a war in Iran and a potential resource shortage. Our communities fought to pass the 'Built Smart from the Start Act' in 2023, and now the results: New homes built in Oregon will see a big jump in energy efficiency and resilience features. Lower bills, more safety! And all new central cooling will be done by heat pumps. Building for the future!
Yes we do! #makepolluterspay
In practice, that means lower energy bills, better comfort and health, and more resilience for new houses. And a key provision is that any home builder installing cooling (and most do) must install a heat pump instead of traditional central A/C. Most new homes will have a heat pump!
Oregon took a major step toward a healthier, more affordable, resilient and clean future for housing this week. It's been a long time in the making! Any new house built in Oregon starting October this year will be 27% more energy efficient than the last building code!
