In this case the collection came from the collection of the Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus, founded by Daniele Comboni. Much(all?) of the collection is Ge'ez, even though he didn't work in Ethiopia, AFAIK.

Probably because they were cleaning and cooking for Passover, the #Vatican only added 7 #Manuscripts this week
www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2026...
Includes 2 Ge'ez, a complaint about East heresy, Italian text on agriculture, and more!

New picture of Peter Comestor discovered!
Shammai taught that one should ask only Claude, while Beit Hillel taught either Claude or ChatGPT were acceptable, based on your minhag. One day a student asked “masters, is it permissible to use Grok?”
When the students had cleaned the blood off the floor they decided not to ask that again
Ignore me. It's the Borso d’Este Bible from Modena. I was thinking "this has to be at the BAV", and got confused
I just happened upon this video from last month of Pope Leo looking at a manuscript at the BAV. Anyone recognize it? I thought it was one of the Urbanati bibles, but they're not nearly chonky enough...

Perhaps the #Vatican was at the #MAA2026 this past week, as they only added 10 #Manuscripts
www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2026...
includes 3 volumes of cameos, 4 Ge'ez, a library catalogue, a cosmography, and more
#MedievalSky #Skystorians
I was not expecting snow on the drive out to #MAA2026 but….
I’ll be there to talk about calendars and non-existent saints. And databases
A small fan of bookmark cards sitting on a piece of marbled paper. Each card has a scallop shell and says CoKL and the url www.cokldb.org
New batch of tiny bookmark cards printed up for #MAA26
a solid 66 #Manuscripts from the #Vatican this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2026...
a ton more Ge'ez, medicine, the tragedy Crispo, ancient cameos, classics, chronicles, specula and more!
#MedievalSky #Skystorians
Oooh. I’ll have to find time during the MAA to sneak over and look. I’m daytripping so timing is…. Complex.
A crop of a page of humanist script. There is a large G at top left, gold over blue ground with whitework. The text begins, Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres... with several mistakes
Imagine being the scribe who screws up one of the top 3 most famous phrases in Latin, not once or twice, but three times!
BAV Ott.lat.1899
Vitruuis de Architectura prologus incipit written in a red humanist hand
Take a moment to marvel at the rarest of sights, the word "prologus" written fully out in a rubric! BAV Ott.lat.1930
28 #Manuscripts from the #Vatican this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2026...
Includes tons of Ge'ez, 3 Lorenzo Valla, additional classical works, the Conclave for Gregory XIV, juridical works, a chronicle of Padua and more!

I don't have an example of "Meart". Maart is a common Dutch variant tho...

Only 10 #Manuscripts this week from the #Vatican
www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2026...
some Ge'ez (including music), an Arbor Philosophiae, a Formularium, some classical works and more (not much more)

Interestingly even in Dutch language calendars, Martin isn't rendered with the double-a. We've got Mertens and Mertiins and Martyns...
www.cokldb.org/p/v100/saint...
Forgot to mention, this is June 8. There is an attested "St. Mark" on this date in Essen (western DE). Medard is the most common saint on that date. The calendar is in a weird French, so spellings are all a bit ... vibe
Anyone have a reading for this that isn't just "the scribe screwed up marc"? (BPL MS q.med 105 13th C Metz)
Great! If I might make a suggestion, it might be a good idea to disable “debug” mode so that it doesn’t leak so much info on errors. It was giving versions of python and Django and nginx… etc
would a proof count as a first, or is it before the first?
@medievallitura.bsky.social I think the Books of Duchesses site has crashed booksofduchesses.com, it's returning a bunch of DB connection failures.
Oooh not just manuscript waste, calendar fragment!
I have a soft spot for those, but I guess if there people out there who are _not_ building a massive Horae database….
We could have a second room for “Look what they did to my boy” manuscripts that might have looked nice originally, but….
Ok. So we’ve got to start with a taxonomy of meh. I see
- crummy parchment
- “gotta use it all” margins measured in microns
- scribal hands only a mother could love
- errrrors
I’m sure there are more!
Before the blizzard
The flakes are yet to fall
