This is actually a really interesting tell, because the "invevitability of AI" narrative sure feels like it's really about the inevitability of climate change, what with how obviously AI accelerates it and immediately requires extreme increases in energy production

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from 26 years in higher ed, it’s that having faculty governance and tenure is basically having a fake union. They are exploitable systems based on squishy policies that favor the admin, rather than legally-binding rules that represent the many & favor the workers.
Screenshot from Mastodon, white text on black background: Erik Uden @ErikUden@mastodon.de Once libraries are nonexistent any modern fascist movement wouldn't even have to burn books, but flick one switch and they'd be remotely deleted from your Amazon Kindle or similar digital "library". Capitalists are already building the infrastructure to do this through DRM, so stop believing tech is apolitical - the defunding of libraries and paywalling of information are all part of this.
A reminder during #NationalLibraryWeek, libraries are our best and last defense against the fascist monopoly on knowledge and information
Rugged individualism is one of the biggest lies.

Marketing has infected every facet of our lives.
I am broken-hearted at the terrible news that my alma mater, @hampshirecollege.bsky.social, after 56 yrs, is closing. Its death is a victory for conformism, for corporatism, for higher education's dull love of hierarchy & status. It's a grievous defeat for imagination & experimentation.
my LEGALITY IS OUR FOURTH PRIORITY shirt
I think another reason many Americans Feel Bad About the Economy:
There is a constant barrage of information indicating to the casual observer that people who run scams and lie and refuse to play by the rules aren't just going unpunished, they're *making way more money than you are* as a result.
In fairness nobody could have predicted this
I'm old-fashioned. I want your business to have a website. Don't gimme an Instagram page and a phone number. I wanna see what services you offer and then make an appointment on a regular degular website!
The teaching part isn't just getting a student an answer, it's helping them think critically about what they are trying to figure out and how to ask the Qs that will get them to the correct answer or relevant resource. The journey is as important as the destination. You can't outsource that.
"Turns out students aren't great at asking questions well." No fucking shit. Literally any educator could tell you that. 90% of my job as a high school librarian is trying to figure out what kids actually want versus what question they asked.
Also colleges restructured the way they function in response to the last waves of protests. My niece’s college did all they could to ensure no large groups could gather on campus for any purpose. Meetings / gatherings for organizing shut down. Kids punished academically.
California cities: progress toward RHNA...

Viral photo from some years back of a man nonchalantly mowing his yard with a tornado on the horizon .
How it feels doing literally any task right now.
something strange and horrible and somehow fitting that we should have a very real threat of madman civilizational destruction at the very moment when we also have humans on the dark side of the moon taking pictures that show how small, precious, and beautiful our world and existence is
"This is a distraction" is just a lie. "They are taking your money and using it to commit criminal acts beyond our comprehension" is 100% true. I think we should tell the truth and not the lie. The latter also has the benefit of at least somewhat centering the issue of atrocities.
President threatens the eradication of 90 million people, and America's opposition party is just not getting it.
Complete loss of words for the way our elected officials on both sides of the aisle are approaching These Times.
This is:
1. Deeply moving.
2. The first time I've ever seen a real-life astronaut be anything other than serious or happy in space. Obviously they have been (they're human), but folks on earth have only ever seen this in movies or on TV.
Imagine watching your tears of grief float around you.
It's impolite to call Musk a genocidal white nationalist because "civility" in American discourse functions not as a neutral procedural norm but as an asymmetric weapon to shield the powerful from accurate moral characterization while policing the tone of those who object.
The means-testing thing is so pernicious man. Designed in a lab to sow resentment, degrade the public good, shrink services and transfer costs away from government coffers and to individuals’ post-tax income
the best advice i ever got about reporting came from a photographer who was on an assignment with me. i was anxious i was gonna screw up, miss something, leave something out. and they were like 'no no the whole point is YOU are figuring out what to put in the frame and doing justice to THAT'
A single vote for Trump in the birthright citizenship case would be as bad as anything the Court has done since Bush v. Gore. This issue has been settled for more than a century. It is the jurisprudential equivalent of asking what 2+2 is. Any answer other than 4, something is deeply, deeply wrong.
When people ask me about restoring trust in higher ed, there's a reason I bring up presidents calling the police on their students and how I find it curious those students' trust is never a concern
How long until this reduces the prep time we're allotted for each class? How long until it's used as a reason to increase class sizes because we are no longer grading? I worry that admin will use this to overload faculty with classes whether we use it or not.
At the very moment when the US is threatening Cuba and Venezuela, at war with Iran, and confronting Russia, Syracuse University is deciding to get rid of majors focusing on Latin America, the Middle East, and Russia??!!
The real theme of the modern age is "Nobody Wants This". AI, ICE in airports, ICE in general, the Iran War, data centers sending actual cities wiht people into blackouts -- "nobody" wants this. And yet here we are.
I want fully staffed public pools, and libraries that are cathedrals to public goods and a society where walling yourself off with money is viewed as sociopathic.
