This is also why I check out when people minimize racism as a material & economic interest. Towns keep their taxes low by pulling over Black people. CEOs pump up their stock by selling technology meant to surveil us. Insurance companies meet their margins selling exorbitant policies in Black cities.

American Gentry Local Power and the Social Order

Here’s a modern analysis. Rural areas are extremely vulnerable to capture by local notables. Landowners, the church, company town industrialists, modern petty capitalists, whatever it is. Rural economic activity is not sophisticated enough to provide a material base for pluralistic social life.
