i'm grateful to have gotten my start in local news, and local reporting is something i still hold close to my heart. i'm glad the inaugural @localnewsday.bsky.social offers a chance to highlight the work local newsrooms do :)

this #localnewsday, i'm grateful that @objectivejournos.bsky.social can amplify the work of local newsrooms publishing strong accountability reporting that makes journalism better — we recently repubbed this story from @baltimorebeat.bsky.social in that vein: objectivejournalism.org/2026/04/blac...
it's not advocacy journalism to give your readers the proper context to judge the words of your sources. it used to be a basic function that all journalists were supposed to practice and it is just not there consistently from Times news reporters covering trans issues.
The AP's story on the IOC's new policy mentions that it "also restricts" athletes like two-time Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya. That word "also" is doing a lot of work. New piece on who this policy is actually about: www.readtpa.com/p/the-iocs-n...
This is really despicable and I’m reminded of all the LGBTQ influencers I’ve seen promote Chili’s triple dippers and pink glitter martinis and mozzarella sticks all over TikTok and Instagram Reels. They need queer and trans people for marketing, while discriminating against them as employees
Education and health care are some of the largest sources of overseas Filipina workers, and they wield power differently. “When those women workers strike, the facilities can't work without them,” said organizer Jollene Levid. “Filipino women have been instrumental in these types of labor fights.”
The @washingtonpost.com layoffs disproportionately affected union members of color, per data from the @postguild.bsky.social.
50% of Hispanic/Latino guild members, 45% of Black members, and 43% of Asian members were laid off, compared to 37% of white members.

Every month, we have a goal of gaining 15 new members, which covers the costs of commissioning five new stories!
Support the only Asian American-run news outlet covering health, climate, and the environment, starting at $2/month:
Anyways, today is a good day to become @thexylom.com's member. As WaPo abandons its international coverage, the responsibility of reporting from Sudan to Ukraine will fall to indie outlets like ours.
I just want to keep my job and not have to self-deport by the end of 2026:

What do we want? TRANS NEWS!
When do we want it? 2026!!
We're down to the last few days of our 2026 fundraiser, and we've got less than $5000 left to raise, but we still need your help to raise it.
Help us reach the goal and fill up this extremely not phallic shape with the colors of the trans pride flag!

less than six months after striking workers at @pghguild.com ended their historic strike with a labor victory, their paper — the pittsburgh post-gazette — is closing. story for @objectivejournos.bsky.social here: objectivejournalism.org/2026/01/the-...
In this in-depth interview Billie Jean Sweeney — a former editor at The New York Times — details how the paper shifted towards openly promoting anti-trans hatred, why this was directed from the very top, how some staff pushed back and the immense damage done by the NYT legitimizing bigotry.
While working on this piece, I couldn't forget the wave of harassment trans journalists got here mid-2024 when we spoke up about the NYT's transphobia and the complicity of major figures there.
We need a lot less reverence for institutions, and a lot more listening to folks on the front lines.
@thexylom.com is the only outlet covering science through an asian american, internationalist lens. founder @alexip718.com wrote more about the outlet’s work for @objectivejournos.bsky.social last year: objectivejournalism.org/2024/09/what...
after a year full of attacks on science, give the gift of support independent newsrooms doing the work to cover it! i want to shout out the folks at @thexylom.com, who are just 20 members short of their end-of-year goal: fundrazr.com/sustain-the-...

happy #movementmediamonday! movement media has helped me stay hopeful in the face of mainstream news' flaws, so editing @lewispants.bsky.social’s series on movement journalism for @objectivejournos.bsky.social has been a joy.

Today, on #MovementMediaMonday we join partners across the country in amplifying media that moves us toward justice. Truth-telling is an act of resistance. For the people who write from inside prisons, it’s also an act of courage.
ONLY ON ASSIGNED MEDIA:
Fenway Health's annual gala Friday drew protests and cries of "Shame!" after the LGBTQ community health center ended care for trans people under 19.

One way I have found to mourn someone is to set up a monthly sustaining donation to a mutual aid effort they cared about. If you can join me in honoring Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social with a sustaining donation today, please do. Thank you Alice, and I will not let the bastards grind me down.

Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth
You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

Proud to have worked on this story. Journalism spends so much time focusing on other industries — it’s worth turning that focus onto ourselves and asking the same questions.
