No April Fool's joke will outdo the ridiculousness of the federal government's arguments on birthright citizenship - which they'll air in about an hour at SCOTUS.

Maybe Frank Herbert (Dune) is thought not to have been "hard sci fi," but he was when it came to science -- and religion, philosophy, and politics!

It’s quietly devastating to realize all at once this late in life that while I *knew* all those sci fi books were dystopian, still somewhere in my heart I thought some part of it would be cool.

Most people just whine about how bad shit is without having the balls to run for office and change it. Kat’s endured physical assault, harassment, bigotry, misogyny, indictment on bullshit charges, and she’s still here! It would have broken most.

@katmabu.bsky.social is a bad, brave motherfucker

Oscar-winner Ryan Coogler recalling how a college writing professor pushed him to become a screenwriter & the possibility of #Sinners being taught in film curriculums someday:
“I have so much respect for professors…for dedicating their life to future generations & making sure their minds are solid.”

I was headed into nursing myself before getting starry-eyed about a very traditional academic path in the Humanities. Software development hasn't been bad, with an extra masters post-doc, but I enjoyed my time in the "healing arts."

PhD in English, Victorian Studies. Dissertation on affect and the "clerk." Taught as a post-doc adjunct for a few years. I've been a software developer in academic libraries for almost a decade.

I love that @modernlanguage.bsky.social has posted the depositions of the DOGE bros who gutted the National Endowment for the Humanities. All part of the lawsuit the MLA, AHA, and ACLS have filed against the federal government.

An anatomical drawing of a cross-section of a man's head. The eyeball has been replaced by an RSS logo. To the left of the face is a "code waterfall" effect as seen in the credit sequences of the Wachowskis' 'Matrix' movie. To the right are clouds of grey roiling clouds, infiltrating the brain as well.

Never let them tell you that enshittification was a mystery. Enshittification isn't downstream of the "iron laws of economics" or an unrealistic demand by "consumers" to get stuff for free.

Crowded interior of the covered Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

I didn't get to touch the Liberty Bell, but I did run into the massive crowds at the convention center there for a . . . flower show! And the thousands of suburban flower lovers getting lunch at the same time in the adjacent Reading Terminal Market. #kitschrules

The entire Democratic strategy debate — "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? — is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!
