Aftermath Video games, the internet and what comes after

www.aftermath.site runs proper videogame stories written by a bunch of OG videogame journalists

Email sent, if you can find the time to add something in your own voice (even if it rehashes the ORG talking points), you should. It demonstrates to your MP that you actually care about the issue.

I hope they're able to find alternate funding, I was excited for this

A sidescrolling game for the Playdate console. A tank is driving left to right across the screen in front of a scrolling city background. On the right side of the screen is a large alien mothership which is targeting the player. Other vehicles and platforms can be seen on screen

I always forget that i'm supposed to actually share what I'm working on every one in a while... So here's a WIP from an upcoming @play.date title. I'll share more over the next few weeks with a hopeful release sometime before summer.

Something that jumped out at me was the glitch effect on text transitions - it feels a bit thematically confused. I'd probably go for a fade in/out. The trailer doesn't really scream 'horror' to me either, thats more subjective of course. High CTR I can believe, cool premise. Hope it succeeds.

I tried this last year! I fell waaaaaaay short of the mark (too ambitious) but it was a good experience. What are you working on next?

In your opinion then, are these films "failing" because they're trying too hard to be (in this case) 'Silent Hill 2: The Movie'?

An actual question - Why do you think it is that video game adaptations are almost always terribly received?

Put Your Name on Your Game, a Talk by Bennett Foddy and Zach Gage Despite the onslaught of diverse and experimental work published on Steam and consoles every day, one significant taboo remains in indie games and it's not the one you would think: Indie designers don...

Bennett Foddy and Zach Gage spoke at GDC on this topic a little while ago!

gdcvault.com/browse/gdc-1...

The gist: In every other creative industry, artists sign their work. Why should videogames be any different?

In what world is that "dual Israeli citizenship" (+ personal insult) line allowed by Steam mods? Surely that falls clearly into racial/religious discrimination?

It also glosses over that those intermediate stages are crucial to the end product. By having an AI do that work you're outsourcing your creative vision to a Frankenstein's monster made of the stolen ideas of other artists, and by the same token feeding the monster with your own ideas.

Wow I have been super not present for a few months now. People of Bluesky... what's going on? Tell me about what you're working on, or want to work on. Any and all. If you're reading this, I mean you!

I'm so happy with how this is coming together now, the laser feels fantastic. It still needs more juice but I'd say this is about 50x as effective as the previous iteration, what do you think?

Proton VPN has a forever free + no ads + no throttling tier, the only downside is you can't pick your server location. That ofc doesn't matter when your only requirement is "not the UK".

Totally agree we shouldn't have to use it though.

Slow progress as Ive been in a bit of a slump but my little guy can shoot now. I hoped I could get away with not showing projectiles bc of the performance cost but I dont think this sells the effect. Anybody got any ideas for ways I can add juice without more sprites?

Proton VPN (probably others, haven't checked) have a free 'random server' mode on their android app that let's you bypass the verification. We shouldn't have to ofc, but at least we can do it for free. Hope it helps

** Bit of an addendum - I do think that Itch has handled the situation poorly and that they should have given advance notice, but that doesn't detract from the fact that they didn't do this by choice

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

I can't believe how much I enjoyed it. Really refreshing to see an overwhelmingly hopeful movie for a change

8 months ago 0 0 0 0

How this fight rests with anybody other than us consumers. Valve and Itch and whoever else affected should absolutely be calling out explicitly who forced them to do this and why, but I don't see how it benefits anybody for these companies to martyr themselves

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

If its marginally less profitable to listen to these fringe groups than it is to allow Itch and Valve (and others) to operate normally, then they'll let them operate normally. Clearly the long term solution is to have more payment providers or some kind of regulation, but until then I don't see...

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

But much like Visa and Mastercard can stop Valve and Itch making money, WE can stop Visa and Mastercard from making (quite so much) money. I agree it's a monumental task and cutting their revenue by even 1 or 2% would be a huge effort, but at the end of the day all they care about is money

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

But why would Itch and Valve have an easier time of it? Valve is a much bigger player than Itch and even then they're a fraction of the size of Visa and Mastercard, and the second Valve defies them they suddenly lose the ability to generate revenue. it's an impossible battle for a business

8 months ago 3 0 1 0

@itch.io is a victim here, the same as the affected creators. If they don't abide by visa and mastercard t.o.c. they lose all income overnight. What good does that do anybody? They're nowhere near large enough to fight this on their own. You should be angry at visa and mastercard
