Not strictly true - Robbins said pressure was put upon Cabinet Office by civil servants within No10 to get round vetting.

Not same as implying it was No10 holistically or that it was Starmer. Implication was it was McSweeney, but Robbins said he would not throw another civil servant under a bus.

Well, everyone will have their own view, and perhaps Olly Robbins testimony tomorrow will change the narrative again. But, listening to HoC debate, imo Starmer’s put up a plausible defense - and by admitting upfront the misjudgment in appointing Mandelson, partly neutralized that line of attack.
