Yes, there's definitely ways to nuance it, like all the 5e lair actions etc.
But the benefit of this approach is how simple it is. Especially if you're a rubbish GM who can't multi-task or make tactical decisions, like me 😉
There's a simple bit of #ttrpg design genius that I want to share. It's applicable to lots of games and is a simple tweak that will make boss combats more exciting.
In Spectaculars, villains get 1 action per PC.
That's it. No more do you need crowds of minions. One dragon can eat them all.

When we were preparing for our first born, we had an exhaustive test that included:
- No alliteration
- The Judge test (does their name work if you put His/Her Lord Justice... before it)
- Forename plus surname must be 3 or more syllables

I've still got a boardgame idea. You each have an army trying to find the Krool heart. You flip over a hex tile and shit happens. Army is high attack, low stealth. If army is damaged, it becomes a company. If your company is damaged, it becomes an individual unit (low attack, great stealth).
