the checkpointing is done by the closing connection, so like if the last client process crashes, sqlite will still have wal files. but easily resumes on next connection. readers block checkpointing so even automatic checkpoints wont happen if something is locking up the wal

yea automatic checkpoint is at 1000 pages or when every connection is closed (if the last one exists gracefully). theres an advantage in writing records very quickly to the wal journal, and then inserting them in batch to the db. it avoids trying to do that frequently on small writes

something like "pragma journal_mode" prints it if youre connected to it, usually when all connections close cleanly it should clean up the wal file but it doesnt always do that . the shm file can be ignored entirely. if a new connection finds existing wal files thats fine
