I get the feeling sometimes that there’s a small but influential cultural convention that adults aren’t “supposed” to have frivolous fun, and birthdays are the epitome of frivolous to people who feel that way.

I am the opposite, I love to make a big deal out of my birthday but it had never occurred to me to burn a precious PTO day for it. Then I dated someone who took his birthday off every year and helped me to see it was like a personal holiday day and worth of time off. Now I try to!
