The artwork might look familiar, because it was the image featured in Jaws, in the scene where Ellen Brody was perusing a book on sharks. She saw the picture and shouted at her son “Michael! Did you hear your father? Out of the water now! Now!” as he sat in his new birthday boat.

Fifteen years later, the story was described in a National Geographic issue, where artist Paul Calle was commissioned to paint the scene of disaster.

Seventy years ago today, a great white shark attacked and sank a lobster dory off Fourchu, Cape Breton. One man drowned and the other survived, clinging to a piece of the boat until he was rescued by another vessel. Teeth extracted from the hull confirmed the shark species.
