Treasure is the absolute best. I reckon Victorialand second. It’s just not peak Cocteau without a drum machine.

Just realised that I have Catholic guilt, a Protestant work ethic, and an atheist’s certainty than none of it matters in the long run.

Constantly amazed that anyone who has read and understood the gospels could call themselves a Christian and still support Trump and see no conflict in that (written as an atheist recovering Anglican).

If you’re going to McIntosh I think the keg pale ale is better. Last time I had the bitter it had just a touch too much crystal malt.

I should think so too.

Just received a press release with the headline, "Newstalgia and swangy flavor trends reshape Gen Z’s food and beverage choices” and was violently sick.

If serious people are even asking that question it’s time to shut the fucker down.

Barnsley Council really do seem to be knocking it out of the park these days.

Fake news. Those are the best numbers. Beautiful numbers. No one has ever seen those numbers before. Some very clever people told me they don’t even know what those numbers mean.

Misread that as Martin and when he’s feeling better I suggest asking him if he’d prefer that.

So close! We already have a winner. Just round the corner at Heacham/Hunstanton.

An hour from where now live. Watching sunset over the sea when you’re on the east coast is a bit of a thing I have to say.

Ooh! I’ll give you that. Heacham, close enough. How did you get it?

This week I am on a writing retreat to kickstart my next book: The Penguin Book of Beer! A free copy of that book goes (in the distant future) to anyone who can guess where I’m holed up from this photo. (Hope it doesn’t show metadata or I’m fucked).

Me too before I got this gig. The reason I did is that my editor is pretty young and grew up drinking craft beer. Hopefully we’ll see more of that cohort getting into commissioning positions. I’d give up on the Grauniad if I were you though - they’re not just indifferent but actively hostile.

Just a reminder that I regularly cover pubs in the national press. Also what surprised me is one of my first pub columns- best pubs in Norfolk - was roundly criticised in the comments for being too gastropubby. My readers want to see “proper pubs” - which entirely supports your point.

The six best beers you’ll find only in Lidl — chosen by our expert Pete Brown picks his favourite bargain beers brewed exclusively for the German supermarket

In this week’s @thetimes.com, the best beers to be had at Lidl. Maybe not the best beers anywhere, and trying to navigate their range is bizarrely difficult, but at these prices there are some very decent bargains to be had (paywall) www.thetimes.com/life-style/f...

Had some statements for books of mine that have earned out (the dream!) so I think it's worth reminding people: if you love an author, seek out her backlist. Ask bookshops to order them if you can. Bookshops these days often won't have older titles, because of space limitations & returns policies🧵

On the acceptance of GenAI
Joep Schuurkes — 5 April 2026
By using GenAl:
• I accept the models were trained on stolen data.
• I accept that the data was labeled by exploited workers.
• I accept the environmental costs of the data centers running these models.
• I accept that I am outsourcing some of my skills to a company.
• I accept these companies don't have a viable business model.
• I accept that I am granting more power to big tech and their vision for the world.
• I accept that I am granting more power to the United States.
• I accept that all this effort could have spent elsewhere

My dad was a “tufting mechanic” at Shaw Carpets. The job seemed to mainly involve him playing a card game with two decks of cards called “wogga”.

I did see that. So shocked. He sent me a nice message on the day it went live and then this news. Terrible.

I wrote a novel using AI. Writers must accept artificial intelligence – but we are as valuable as ever | Stephen Marche Mastery of banal style is losing its usefulness – but language is more powerful than ever. It’s up to the writer to do what machines can’t
