Maybe good taste in bagels and good taste in dips are linked?

My mom-pride meter ticks up 10% whenever my 10 year old son swaps out ranch for blue cheese at a restaurant :)

I mentioned it bc I’ve tried to rush it and very much regretted it!

I second the King Arthur but its a tough weeknight option bc the rises after the fridge rest are long and important. A solid weekend choice, though!

Agreed. And it goes beyond the colleges. My guidance counselors gave me terrible advice to apply to big public universities to get the best deal and I ended up with the most aid/scholarship at a SLAC I randomly applied to against their advice.

There we go! With the appropriate amount of cream cheese. A thing of beauty.

Dude...where are the bagels?

💯. I just wrote a promotion letter where the applicant wrote how many kids she had in her documents (FOUR! All under 10!). You better believe I took it into account when evaluating her accomplishments & I made a point to commend her for her commitment to excellence during those years.

They might know her from her more recent work as a performer of children’s songs about pancakes.

I saw her at the Kid stage at Austin City Limits, which was packed with drunk 40 somethings (I among them) yelling “Play Stay!!!” She finally relented but was obviously so mad about it. 😂

More TB in the US likely reflects post-COVID failures in public health infrastructure abroad (which will likely be exacerbated by the US decreasing aid to international doctors and monitoring programs).

To be fair, this one isn’t really RFK’s fault. This isn’t a vaccine failure— we don’t vaccinate against TB in the US bc the vaccine isn’t very good and it makes monitoring exposure more expensive (blood test vs. PPD).

Yea I went back in in December. I didn’t realize the timing would be so off in the summer. We won’t even have scores before June?!? How is this slower than the NIH?

2 months ago 1 0 1 0

Yep! So considerate of them to tell us bad news twice. Just in case it was unclear.

This timing of this post seems to coincide with my own "Contingent Application status" email from the ACS, so I share an "ugh" in solidarity with you.

By “heartfelt letter,” do you mean “Summary Statement?”

3 months ago 3 0 0 0

Hey all, I reached out to the PO of my NIGMS MIRA to ask if the gov't shut down, and rescheduling of study sections, might allow for some accommodation to the standard rule that PIs cannot resubmit a MIRA while their MIRA (or other RPG) is under review (waiting in scores or summary statements) 🧪

Thanks for your response, Mary! It seems like theoretically, everything is back to normal with NCEs, but no one has changed the guidance on whether PIs should be planning for them or not. I'm glad to hear yours went through! Hope you enjoy the holidays with your little one!

a man with a beard is asking if gangnam style still a thing ALT: a man with a beard is asking if gangnam style still a thing

Does anyone know if no-cost extensions at NIH are still at thing?

Has anyone gotten one?

Any insights at all apart from "don't count on it?" (which is the advice we get from our grants managers...)

6-year-old steps up after axolotl lab lost funds: "Not a lot of people get how important it is" When a Harvard team lost its research funding into the axolotl, a 6-year-old girl came to their rescue, inspiring the researchers with her actions. Steve Hartman has the story "On the Road."
