And for adults who know little about soil: I like to explain the principle of C sequestration in soil and stress the climate effect of peatlands. I like to refer to "stinky muddy ponds" with a lot of biomass and no oxygen - everybody knows those and can understand that there's a lot of C in it

Depends on the age.

For children, I emphasize that soil and compost are food for plants, that can be food for us, and how many tiny animals and micros there are in one hand of soil or compost - that it's like a large city!
