A cluster of red e-bike city hire bikes with their glowing status lights parked right outside the entrance to the 1990s modern style VQ HQ, which also has a glowing light emanating from its central tower, like a lighthouse.
Mildly pleasing achievement of the evening: after a late(ish) night out, picked up an e-bike #citybike outside my nation’s civil service HQ, cycled home uphill in virtually no time, and with at least half of the journey on protected cycle lanes. #BuildItAndTheyWillCome
Golden hour sunrise over the Firth of Forth, three cyclists silhouetted in the golden light as they ride along the Seafield promenade with waves gently lapping in the background.
Today we had our first cloudless morning as the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol left Seafield on the way along the coast towards Portobello.
The first Dawn over the Forth was seen of 2026. It was something special to take in.
Cheers to Markus Stitz for this amazing photo of myself and two mates on Patrol.

Two mothers pushing prams and walking a dog over the newly pedestrianised bridge at Sandport Place in Leith, Edinburgh. Other walkers and a cyclist are in the background.

Three vehicles parked in the pavement with double yellow lines on Elm Row, Edinburgh. A bin lorry is stuck at the back abd can’t get past.
Another car parked on the pavement on DYLs.
Vehicles parked all over the pedestrian area on Elm Row
Cars ruin everything. Note the bin lorry unable to get past illegally-parked cars. When will this car sewer be fixed?

A map showing the planned route for the March Edinburgh Critical Mass ride
Here is the planned route for March's ride. Meet at 2pm on Saturday 28th at the compass in Middle Meadow Walk for a 2.10pm start

Thanks for the reply Jack – good to hear it’s still WIP.
Should the TRO not have been in place before the white line was added? Without it, it feels like it’s added more ambiguity to what was already a contested space and makes it look like vehicles are parking in a pedestrian zone.
Council consultation page... North Edinburgh Connections (walking, wheeling and cycling) Overview We want to make your streets safer and easier for everyone to get around. In North Edinburgh Connections (formerly NEAT-Connections) we’re proposing changes to roads, pavements and public spaces along: West Granton Road Pennywell Road Ferry Road Changing streets makes it easier and safer for everyone in the community to get to local shops, schools and other community facilities. The proposals include: more accessible pavements reducing traffic to a single lane in each direction on Pennywell Road safer and more crossings protected cycle lanes, connecting to other areas like Granton and the city centre new and improved outdoor spaces, which could include trees, plants and play areas By reducing road space, we can build safer routes and paths for getting around and connecting to other areas. Landscaping with plants and trees will make the area more attractive to travel around or simply spend time in.

This is already a major improvement @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social – thank you for persisting with it.
Do you know if the unprotected pedestrian through-route is going to get some bollards on the shop side?
Also, is the angled parking across the white line permitted?

Great to see, but baby steps compared with other cites. Edinburgh needs lots more of this and faster.

Elm Row update: bollards now protecting cycleway, but halfway point intended as pedestrian space is both being parked on, and also that parking is still encroaching on cycleway. Needs street furniture and / or bollards on sides & carriageway end, like this end area. /cc @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social

Time to price them off the roads everywhere, by all means possible.

An image of a person crossing a zebra crossing on a street corner. A black taxi and another car are visible on the road. The scene is set in an urban area with brick buildings. This photo is credited to Adam Tranter.
Today (11 March) local authorities have been given new powers to install side road zebra crossings at junctions across Wales.
This new legislation will give pedestrians priority at side streets and help support people to walk and wheel more.

Great to see! Thank you for persisting with this @jackrmcaldwell.bsky.social & @leithcentralcc.bsky.social 🙏
We strongly concur with Spokes' assertions that the missing central link in CCWEL needs finished ASAP - even if this an interim measure with 'temporary' infrastructure. www.spokes.org.uk/2026/02/prin...
🚶 ELM ROW CYCLE ROUTE – UPDATE
The new cycle route behind the Elm Row bus stop has been built.
However the old downhill path is still open and marked, so cyclists are still using it. Because of the slope, riders can approach the bus stop area quite quickly.

The time has come to sell, our spare Urban Arrow Cargo Bike edfoc.org.uk/2026/03/04/u... This is a beautiful and special cargo bike, which will make some lucky family very happy 😄
If only Edinburgh could find the will to do this, it would make the city so much better 😄
My gravel bike, morning sun rising in the back left to cloudless blue skies. It’s against a bollard with a bicycle lane indicator. The stone setts forming the new separated cycleway over the Sandport Bridge on The Shore form the ground cover curving up with the Shore’s buildings in the background. Golden light everywhere. The crankset is not level, nor are the valves perpendicular to the ground - an obvious omission in which the photographer says is due to the fact that this is actually a decently busy cycle way at times, and he didn’t want to impede anyone with the photo op.
Some morning zen, brought to you by Leith Connections.
I built “Cycle-Scope” - a weekly-updated active-travel roadworks map using Scottish road works data. It features, Quick filters with (cycle hangers, shared paths, signals/crossings) + extra map layers. Have a look: city-scope.co.uk/cycle-scope
Going car-free is the best thing most people can do for climate. To reduce car dependency, cities should promote car-free living, supporting compact cities through policy, and investing in public transportation, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and shared mobility options.

Elm Row "cycle" lane.
Final stats for the Omni Centre cycle lane in 2025: a slight 1% increase on 2024 with 580,000 journeys; a new record set of 2,265 cyclists on Friday, 7th November.
The significant increase in numbers in prior years came after the development of cycling infrastructure on Leith Walk.
