"Democracy" is also so ingrained as a value in the modern world that authoritarians never paint themselves as opposed to democracy, but its saviour. They are the will of the people incarnate, cutting through the swamp, the ultimate direct democracy.

When worldbuilding, democracy falls when people convince themselves/are tricked into believeing democracy and institutions are useless because they're failing to defend "the nation/our values", and thus authoritarianism becomes the "only way to save us".

My least favourite part of tiktok is people giving no context to what theyre talking about

It's always "the Jello situation" or "everyone knlws what's happening on booktok right now"

What would you describe as his shitty writing?

Martin's writing is just as much about heroism as Tolkien was - the difficulty to find it and how vital it is. The heroism of Samwise is the heroism of Samwell. Beyond, I'd argue the failure of heroes is a central theme to what Tolkien regarded as his best work, the Silmarillion

Martin understands Tolkien vastly better than most, and while he was writing in response to that era of fantasy, his response was never "actually humans are fundamentally evil". His response was, and always has been, "humans are fundamentally complicated".

These posts usually contrast him with Tolkien as someone who elevates "morally good" characters.

But in reality, as someone who has made something of a career talking about Martin and Tolkien, it really betrays a fundamental lack of understanding of both authors.
